What does a GIS coordinator do?

A GIS Coordinator manages and oversees the use of Geographic Information Systems (GIS) within an organization. They are responsible for planning, implementing, and maintaining GIS projects, including data collection, analysis, and mapping. GIS Coordinators often supervise GIS staff, ensure data accuracy, provide technical support, and help departments use GIS tools effectively. Their work supports decision-making in fields such as urban planning, environmental management, and public safety.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a GIS coordinator?

To thrive as a GIS Coordinator, you need strong expertise in geographic information systems (GIS), spatial data management, and a relevant degree in geography, environmental science, or a related field. Familiarity with GIS software like ArcGIS, QGIS, database management systems, and certifications such as GISP are commonly required. Excellent project management, problem-solving, and communication skills help you coordinate teams and collaborate with stakeholders effectively. These skills ensure accurate spatial data analysis, seamless project execution, and informed decision-making within organizations.

What are some typical challenges a GIS coordinator faces when managing data from multiple sources?

GIS Coordinators often encounter challenges related to data consistency and integration when collecting and managing geographic information from various sources. Ensuring that all datasets are compatible in terms of format, projection, and accuracy requires careful quality control and sometimes significant data cleaning. Additionally, coordinating with different departments or external agencies can present communication hurdles, so strong organizational and collaboration skills are essential. Overcoming these challenges is key to delivering reliable GIS solutions that support organizational decision-making.

What is the difference between Gis Coordinator vs GIS Technician?

  • Write and manage python scripts for automation of process workflows
  • Conduct on-site training for field application deployment during project kick-offs
  • Provide daily technical support to field staff with a patient and collaborative approach

  • GIS/GISP Certification AND/OR Bachelor's Degree in Geographic Information Systems, Geography, Computer Science or related field
  • Minimum 3 years' experience using ArcGIS in a GIS Technician (or equivalent) role with applied cartography, database management, and spatial analysis.
  • Demonstrated ability to comfortably operate ArcGIS Pro, ArcGIS Online
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills.
