Job description

Individuals interested in applying to work as a substitute teacher must complete the professional application for teaching & administrative positions. All substitutes will be required to attend substitute training; you will receive an email with instructions a week before the training. All substitute employees must submit to a criminal record and child abuse and neglect background check before they will be approved to substitute for Salem City Schools. Substitute employees shall pay for the fingerprinting, criminal record check and abuse and neglect check.
To be eligible for substitute teaching, substitute teachers must:
  • be at least 18 years old;
  • hold a high school diploma or have passed a high school equivalency examination approved by the Board of Education; and
  • hold an associates degree or higher, or have completed 30 credit hours from an accredited institution of higher learning

A substitute teacher is (i) one who is employed to substitute for a contracted teacher for a temporary period of time during the contracted teacher's absence, or (ii) one who is employed to fill a teacher vacancy for a period of time, but for no longer than 90 teaching days in such vacancy, unless otherwise approved by the Superintendent of Public Instruction on a case-by-case basis, during one school year.
