What is a temp mining worker?

A Temp Mining job refers to a temporary position within the mining industry, where individuals are hired for a limited period to assist with various tasks such as excavation, equipment operation, or site maintenance. These roles often fill short-term needs during peak production periods or when permanent staff are unavailable. Temp mining workers may be employed directly by mining companies or through staffing agencies, and the duration of employment can range from a few weeks to several months. This type of work typically requires physical stamina, safety awareness, and sometimes previous experience in mining or heavy labor environments.

What skills and qualifications are needed to thrive as a temp mining worker?

To thrive as a Temp Mining Worker, you generally need physical stamina, basic mechanical aptitude, and a high school diploma or equivalent. Familiarity with mining equipment, personal protective equipment (PPE), and safety protocols is typically required, and some roles may need certifications like MSHA (Mine Safety and Health Administration) training. Dependability, teamwork, and strong communication skills are important soft skills for working efficiently in challenging and hazardous environments. These abilities are crucial to ensure safety, productivity, and compliance with industry regulations in mining operations.

What challenges do temp mining workers face, and how can they be managed?

Temp mining workers often face challenges such as adapting quickly to new teams, learning site-specific safety protocols, and working in physically demanding environments. Since assignments are temporary, familiarity with equipment and workflows may vary from site to site, requiring flexibility and strong communication skills. To manage these challenges, it's helpful to arrive prepared, ask questions, and build rapport with permanent staff to ensure safe and efficient operations. Many mining companies offer thorough inductions and on-the-job training to support temp workers in adjusting smoothly.

What is the difference between Temp Mining vs Temp Drilling?

Industry UsageMining industry
Job FocusExtracting minerals from earthDrilling for oil, gas, or minerals

Temp Mining and Temp Drilling are both temporary roles within the extraction industries. Temp Mining involves working in mining sites extracting minerals, often requiring safety certifications and working underground or on surface mines. Temp Drilling focuses on drilling operations for oil, gas, or minerals, typically on rigs or drilling sites. While both roles involve fieldwork in resource extraction, they differ in industry focus and specific skill requirements.

Which temp mining job pays the most?

In temporary mining roles, positions such as heavy equipment operators and mine supervisors tend to have the highest pay rates due to their specialized skills and responsibilities. These roles often require certifications, experience, and adherence to safety standards, which contribute to higher compensation compared to entry-level positions like laborers or general helpers.

We are looking for engineers who enjoy solving complex reliability challenges, partnering closely with client operations teams, and delivering measurable improvements in equipment performance and asset reliability. Opportunities may range from individual project assignments to longer-term consulting engagements.

Responsibilities

As a Reliability Engineer with Implementation Engineers, you'll work alongside client maintenance and operations teams to improve the reliability, availability, and performance of critical mining assets. Responsibilities may include:

  • Develop, optimize, and sustain preventive maintenance (PM) strategies for mobile and fixed plant equipment.
  • Lead Root Cause Failure Analyses (RCFA) to identify equipment failure modes and implement sustainable corrective actions.
  • Improve asset reliability for crushing, conveying, grinding, flotation, dewatering, pumping, material handling, and other mineral processing systems.
  • Analyze equipment performance, maintenance history, and reliability KPIs to identify improvement opportunities and reduce unplanned downtime.
  • Partner with maintenance planners, supervisors, operations, and engineering teams to prioritize reliability initiatives and improve work execution.
  • Support equipment criticality assessments, Failure Modes & Effects Analysis (FMEA), and Reliability-Centered Maintenance (RCM) activities.
  • Utilize CMMS platforms (SAP PM, Maximo, or similar) to optimize maintenance strategies and improve asset performance.
  • Participate in shutdown planning, reliability improvement projects, bad actor elimination, and defect elimination initiatives.
  • Provide day-to-day reliability engineering support for heavy industrial equipment, including rotating equipment, conveyors, pumps, crushers, mills, and associated process systems.
  • Promote safe work practices while delivering practical, data-driven solutions that improve equipment availability, maintenance effectiveness, and operational performance.
Qualifications

Required

  • Bachelor's degree in Mechanical, Industrial, Electrical, Mining, or related Engineering discipline,
  • 10+ years of Reliability Engineering experience within heavy industrial environments.
  • Experience supporting open-pit or underground mining operations, concentrators, mills, smelters, or other heavy industrial processing facilities.
  • Experience with rotating equipment, conveyors, crushers, mills, pumps, slurry systems, mobile mining equipment, or mineral processing assets.
  • MSHA certification or previous experience working at MSHA-regulated mine sites.
  • Strong understanding of maintenance and reliability principles.
  • Experience leading or facilitating Root Cause Failure Analyses (RCFA).
  • Experience developing and optimizing Preventive Maintenance (PM) programs.
  • Strong communication and client-facing consulting skills.
  • Ability to work full-time on-site for the duration of the engagement.

Preferred

  • Copper, gold, or other hard-rock mining experience
  • MSHA certification (current or previous)
  • Experience with CMMS platforms (SAP PM, Maximo, or similar)
  • Vibration analysis, lubrication, predictive maintenance, or condition monitoring experience
  • Lean Manufacturing, Six Sigma, or Continuous Improvement experience
Ideal Candidate

We're looking for engineers who thrive in challenging industrial environments and enjoy solving complex reliability problems. The ideal candidate combines strong technical expertise with a practical, hands-on approach and the ability to build credibility with maintenance, operations, and engineering teams.

If you're someone who enjoys improving equipment performance, reducing downtime, and seeing your work make a measurable operational impact, we'd like to hear from you.

Why Implementation Engineers?

At Implementation Engineers, you'll do more than support projects -- you'll help transform operations. Our engineers partner directly with client maintenance, operations, and leadership teams to improve reliability, increase productivity, and deliver lasting operational improvements. We value practical problem solvers who enjoy being in the field, working with people, and seeing their ideas translate into measurable results.
