What is a per diem mining?

A Per Diem Mining job is a position in the mining industry where workers are paid a daily allowance, or per diem, in addition to their wages. This payment typically covers expenses such as lodging, meals, and travel, especially for workers who must travel long distances or work in remote locations. These jobs can be temporary or contract-based and are common in roles such as equipment operators, technicians, or engineers. Per diem mining jobs often require long shifts and extended periods on-site, followed by scheduled time off.

What does a typical work schedule look like for a per diem mining?

Per diem mining roles typically offer flexible, as-needed schedules, which means shifts may vary depending on project demands, covering gaps caused by absences or heightened workloads. You may be called in for short-term assignments, sometimes with short notice, and could work days, nights, or weekends depending on the site's needs. This flexibility can be ideal for individuals seeking a non-traditional work arrangement or those supplementing other employment. While you may not have a set weekly routine, per diem roles offer valuable opportunities to gain experience in different settings and with various teams.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive in per diem mining, and why are they important?

To thrive as a Per Diem Mining worker, you need solid knowledge of mining operations, safety protocols, and relevant machinery, often supported by prior industry experience or technical training. Familiarity with equipment such as drills, loaders, and safety monitoring systems, along with certifications in MSHA (Mine Safety and Health Administration) or OSHA standards, is highly valued. Adaptability, strong communication, and reliability are key soft skills, as per diem positions often require quick integration into different teams and shifts. These skills ensure both safety and efficiency while allowing the worker to seamlessly contribute to varied mining projects on an as-needed basis.

Description
Are you looking for a career where you can create a positive working environment and help achieve better employee relations? Are you flexible, proactive, easy to approach, like 'figuring things out' and have a sense of humor? If so, you've come to the right place!
Wood Rodgers, a leading engineering consulting firm, is seeking a Mining Inspector to join our Geotechnical team. The full time Mining Inspector is responsible for ensuring mining and mine‑related construction activities comply with approved plans, specifications, regulatory requirements, and industry best practices. This role will support active mine sites across rural Nevada and the western United States and provide inspection support in Western Nevada between assignments. The ideal candidate has hands‑on mining inspection experience, strong regulatory knowledge, and lining system experience (heap leach pads, tailings facilities, ponds, or similar systems). This position includes per diem for qualifying project assignments.
This is a staffed, hourly, non-exempt position.
What you will be doing
  • Conduct inspections of mining operations, construction activities, and environmental controls to verify compliance.
  • Monitor earthwork, grading, subgrade preparation and material placement associated with mine facilities and structures.
  • Inspect and document installation of liner systems including geomembranes, geosynthetics, clay liners, and protective layers including seaming, testing, and repairs
  • Maintain detailed inspection records, daily reports, photographs, and non‑conformance documentation.
  • Communicate inspection findings clearly to project managers, engineers, contractors, and regulatory personnel.
  • Verify corrective actions are completed in accordance with project requirements.
  • Support inspections or related duties in other projects when not assigned to rural project sites.
  • Adhere to all site safety procedures, MSHA requirements, and company policies at all times.
  • Assist with audits, regulatory inspections, and project closeout documentation as needed.

Qualifications & Skills
  • Experience as a Mining Inspector, Mining Technician, Construction Inspector, or related role.
  • Working knowledge of mining construction practices and Environmental compliance and quality control.
  • Familiarity with MSHA regulations and mine‑site safety protocols.
  • Ability to read and interpret construction drawings, specifications, and permit conditions.
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills.
  • Ability to work independently in remote, rural locations.
  • Liner installation inspection experience preferred (heap leach, tailings, ponds, or similar).
  • Willingness to travel and work variable schedules, including extended field assignments.
  • Valid driver's license and ability to operate a company or personal vehicle on rugged terrain.

A note on hourly pay ranges:
The range does not reflect geographic variations and may fluctuate above or below the stated amount. Offers will be based on several factors, including experience, education, skills, licensure, certifications, training, and location. Base pay is just one part of the comprehensive compensation package offered by Wood Rodgers. If you feel you meet the requirements but may be outside of the pay range, please apply anyway and let's talk through it.
