What is a telecom expense management manager?

Telecom Expense Management Managers are professionals responsible for overseeing and optimizing an organization’s telecommunications costs and services. They analyze telecom bills, manage vendor relationships, negotiate contracts, and implement cost-saving strategies. Their goal is to ensure that the company’s telecom expenses are accurate, justified, and in line with business needs. They often work with IT, finance, and procurement teams to streamline telecom operations and control spending.

Familiarity with Telecom Expense Management (TEM) software like Tangoe or Calero-MDSL, as well as proficiency in Excel and ERP systems, is typically required. Strong attention to detail, analytical thinking, and effective communication are valuable soft skills for excelling in this role. Drive invoice accuracy, dispute resolution, approvals, payment governance, and contract compliance to strengthen financial controls and reduce unnecessary spend.

Set expectations with carriers and TEM providers by monitoring performance against service level agreements and key performance indicators to improve service quality and accountability.

Maintain visibility into telecom inventory, accounts, invoices, and service records to support accurate reporting and operational continuity across the environment.

Identify and implement process improvements and cost-saving opportunities through spend analytics, utilization reviews, and business-case evaluation.

Serve as a key point of coordination across internal stakeholders, suppliers, procurement, and cross-functional teams to resolve operational and billing issues while proactively managing risks, timelines, and communications.

Deliver executive-ready reporting and insights for budgets, vendor spend, procurement activity, and annual planning cycles.

Operate effectively in a high-volume, detail-intensive environment requiring strong business judgment, analytical rigor, and disciplined execution.

Required Qualifications:
