Job Summary
The OSP Field Engineer provides support to Engineering through detailed collection of information from the job site. This position requires a working level of knowledge of OSP (Outside Plant) fiber and copper networks. This position is responsible for identifying and documenting existing field conditions, provide proposed layout/path of new network, which could include aerial, buried, and underground conduit, manhole/handhole, building entrance, and riser facilities.
Responsibilities
Responsibilities and essential job functions include but are not limited to the following:
  • Identify, photograph, and sketch detailed information of required facilities, including cables, poles, terminals, handholes, and other outside plant infrastructure.
  • Capture accurate measurements of attachment heights, span distances, utility structures, and distances from existing/proposed OSP facilities to centerlines, property lines, and curb lines.
  • Identify power and communication facilities and ownership on utility poles.
  • Record bonding, grounding, guying, and anchor information.
  • Deliver detailed field notes and photographs to the Engineering team.
  • Perform other duties and/or contribute to various projects working with minimal supervision, including helping other departments and team members, as directed by supervisor or department head to meet company and departmental goals.

  • Be able to use tools effectively, such as measuring wheels, height sticks, pull finders, MH/HH hooks, and laser rangefinder.

Working Conditions
  • Outdoor working environment with seasonal heat, cold, and other inclement weather conditions.
  • Driving company assigned vehicle to/from work sites in a safe and responsible manner during adverse weather conditions, heavy/light traffic, or at night.
  • Work sites include manholes, hand holes, etc. and will involve extensive walking on diverse types of terrain, working around objects and machinery in constructions areas, and may require confined space entry and ability to work in elevated areas.
  • Regular use of hands and fingers to operate specialized equipment and tools; reaching overhead above the shoulders and horizontally, bending at the waist; standing and/or walking for extended periods of time; lifting objects up to 50 pounds or lifting more than 75 pounds with tool aids.
  • Intermittent indoor office working environment with prolonged sitting.
  • Must be able to work flexible hours including holidays, weekends, and overnight work, as needed, to perform field site visits to meet with contractors, customers, and local agencies.

Other Requirements
  • Minimum of 2 years of relevant experience in Outside Plant Engineering/Construction work.
  • Minimum of 2 years of experience with a telecommunications company, preferred.
  • AutoCAD knowledge with SpatialNet, preferred.
  • Must be able to pass a criminal background check and drug screening.
  • Must have a valid Driver's License with a satisfactory driving record.
