Job Purpose

The Project Design Engineer is responsible for designing, engineering, and costing critical power construction projects.  Activities include:

  • Create designs for strategic, large, technically complex projects.
  • Support the construction of designs.
  • Serve as subject matter expert for the resolution of technical issues.
  • Continuously improve tools, templates and software used to provide proper estimations, designs, and supporting documentation. 

The Project Design Engineer clarifies project scope with clients, oversees discussions with professional engineering and architectural resources, engages special technical resources as necessary, works with equipment vendors to ensure compliance to specifications, performs system reliability calculations, engineers control and monitoring systems, guides the sales and estimating team in the costing and pricing of offers, assists the sales team with the presentation of solutions to clients, and supports the Sales and Operations teams in managing internal and external client relationships.

During construction, the Project Design Engineer assists the Project Managers and installation teams to meet the customer schedule and budget while ensuring safety and quality standards are met.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities
  • Quote and execute successful field projects within critical facilities environments, including oversight and direction of design and estimation deliverables from team members.
  • Work with the Manager, PMO to establish, track, and update team KPIs.
  • Serve as the subject matter expert for critical facility infrastructure and coach team members, including estimators, project managers, and sales personnel, on technical matters.
  • Develop and refine tools and processes to improve team efficiency and accuracy.Work closely with internal and external customers to determine requirements and provide cost-effective, innovative recommendations.
  • Generate, read, interpret, and explain RFQs, SOWs, and drawings (space and single-line) to support the timely creation of solutions, estimates, and related documentation while adhering to company guidelines, including legal review requirements and margin calculations.
  • Maintain a working knowledge of client-specific standards and industry standards, such as Telcordia, within the data center and critical facilities environment.
  • Support the Sales team in identifying and qualifying new market opportunities.
  • Communicate effectively with customers, technicians, and project coordinators.
  • Develop overall project execution strategies and plans.Manage change control processes and implement approved changes.Assist in delivering closeout documentation to clients in a timely manner.
  • Prepare and review post-project evaluations (post-mortems) with the team as required.
  • Review project financials with Sales and Operations management.
  • Maintain consistent communication among all project team members.
  • Actively participate in project design and management decisions.
  • Drive continuous improvement initiatives within and outside the team to eliminate waste and improve processes and quality.
  • Identify opportunities for process and quality improvements, take action when possible, and engage management when additional support is needed.
  • Ensure all corporate safety practices and general safety best practices are consistently followed.
  • Demonstrate the ability to work independently and collaboratively to achieve goals and directives.
  • Perform other duties as assigned by the Manager.
Qualifications
Education and Experience
  • Bachelor's degree in Engineering (Electrical or Mechanical preferred) or a related technical field from an accredited university.
  • Experience with critical power systems, including protected DC power and AC power systems.
  • Basic understanding of cooling systems, control systems, AC switchgear, and generator systems.
  • Experience in project management and operations environments.
  • Understanding of financial statements, budgets, and engineering economic calculations.
  • Ability to create, document, and present design concepts to customers and operations teams.
  • Experience working with professional engineers and architects.
  • Familiarity with construction techniques and the ability to apply them to design solutions.
Skills and Skill Levels
  • Experience using SharePoint and Microsoft Teams.
  • Advanced computer skills, particularly with Microsoft Excel, Microsoft Project, and Microsoft PowerPoint.
  • Experience with technical drawing software, including AutoCAD and Visio.
  • Ability to manage multiple projects and make critical day-to-day decisions.
Other Requirements
  • Valid driver's license.
  • Must successfully obtain and maintain a criminal record check and driver's abstract at required intervals throughout employment.
Work Environment
  • Availability to respond to emails, calls, and correspondence outside normal business hours to support a 24/7 operation.
