Sales Engineer/ Engineer Associate/ Support Specialist - Substation Engineering
Georgia Power - Customer Solutions - Power Services
This position can be located anywhere in the state of Georgia.
WORK LOCATION
  • This position can be located anywhere in the state of Georgia. Reporting location will be Operating Head Quarters.
  • This position will require a mixture of both field and office work.
  • Field work can include site visits to various work locations and may require overnight travel.

Relocation benefits are not available with this position. A company truck will be provided for statewide travel.
This position has been identified as a role that will require the use of a Georgia Power fleet vehicle. The following will be required if you are selected for this position:
  • Must have at least one year of verifiable driving experience (Must hold a valid driver's license for the class vehicle to be operated. Driving permits are not typically considered a valid driver's license).
  • Must have no revocation of driving privileges within the 36 months prior to application, no convictions of major traffic violations (DUI, hit and run, reckless driving, etc.) within the 12 months prior to application, or any pending charges for a major traffic violation at the time of application.
  • Must consent to a continuous monitoring of your Motor Vehicle Record

JOB DESCRIPTION
Sales Engineer-Substation Engineering are responsible for oversight of engineering, design, and coordination of substation projects completed by outside design engineering firms. This includes conducting reviews of completed substation design packages and performance feedback to engineering firms.
Power Services is an unregulated business unit within Georgia Power Company. Power Services offers a unique, exciting, and growing small business environment while still being part of Georgia Power. This position will work with a team that focuses on constructing and maintaining customer-owned distribution, substation, and standby generator systems. Flexible work hours (4-10's or 9-9's) are available. The successful candidate will primarily provide engineering and material procurement support for proposals for substation projects in the state of Georgia; travel will be a required.
MAJOR JOB RESPONSIBILITIES INCLUDE:
  • Make SAFETY our number one priority using a "Safety First" mentality and leading by example.
  • Provide oversight and assistance on design/standards/tools to external engineering firms.
  • Provide quality reviews as required, assist in scheduling resources, and provide developmental feedback to engineering firms.
  • Coordinate and communicate with other departments associated with Substation Design, Power Services Sales and Construction, Project Management, and contractor engineering and construction firms.
  • Interact with manufacturers, vendors, and Southern Company subject matter experts to resolve equipment and material issues.
  • Enter Substation Long-leas time Materials into MERA application.
  • Create and manage project PI numbers in TEAMS application.
  • Perform site visits for projects including pre-engineering / pre-construction meetings, during construction, and post-construction as required to provide expertise on projects and to evaluate and provide feedback on contractor performance. Some overnight travel will be required.
  • Participate in substation design review meetings.
  • Handling multiple tasks simultaneously, setting priorities, and using effective time management and organizational skills to achieve project team goals.
  • Provide assistance as part of a storm restoration team after major storm events in the Georgia Power service territory.

JOB QUALIFICATIONS
Education:
  • Bachelor's degree in electrical, Mechanical, or Civil Engineering (Engineer)
  • Bachelor's degree in engineering technology (Associate)
  • Associate degree with minimum 2 years' relevant industry experience (Support Specialist)
  • No Degree with minimum 5 years relevant industry experience (Support Specialist)

Experience:
  • Substation design or field experience required.
  • Project Management experience is preferred.
  • Experience providing Quality Assurance reviews on design packages is a plus.
  • Experience mentoring and providing performance feedback is preferred.
  • Experience in Transmission and/or Distribution Substation Operations for an electric power utility company is preferred.
  • Experience in the field of Substation Engineering, Field Services, Switchboard Wiring, Power Delivery, Substation Maintenance, or Substation Construction is preferred.
  • Proficiency using Microsoft Office products is required.
  • Ability to be an effective mentor to others and teach job-related skills.
  • Good understanding of utility electric grid operations is preferred.
  • Knowledge of basic electrical power system theory is preferred.

  • Must demonstrate excellent communication skills (oral & written) and the ability to communicate technical issues simply.
  • Must be a self-starter and exhibit strong problem-solving skills.
  • Must work well in a team environment and have the ability to develop and build relationships at all levels.
  • Must possess effective time management and organizational skills sufficient to manage multiple projects with various priorities and competing deadlines.
  • Must demonstrate a customer focus with a willingness to meet the needs of our customers and solicit feedback.
