Automotive Build & Technical Documentation Specialist – OEM Tier  2

Location: Plymouth, MI (Onsite – Troy Design & Manufacturing)
Pay: $27.00 – $29.00 per hour
Schedule: Monday – Friday, 8-hour shifts
Job Type: Full-Time, Contract (via Pro Staff Services, LLC)

About the Role

Troy Design & Manufacturing, a wholly owned subsidiary of Ford Motor Company, is seeking an Automotive Build Technician / Technical Documentation Specialist to support vehicle programs in a Tier 2 OEM environment.

This is a unique hybrid position combining hands-on automotive build capabilities with technical writing and process documentation responsibilities.

The ideal candidate understands how vehicles and components are assembled, modified, tested, and repaired—and can translate that hands-on knowledge into clear, accurate work instructions, build procedures, SOPs, and process documentation for technicians, engineers, and production teams.

This position will work closely with engineering and build teams, both participating in and observing technical processes to ensure that build procedures are properly documented, repeatable, and easy for technicians to follow.

We are particularly interested in candidates who have worked as an automotive or prototype build technician and have experience creating work instructions, service procedures, technical manuals, SOPs, or other process documentation.

Note: This is a contract position through Pro Staff Services, LLC supporting Troy Design & Manufacturing in Plymouth, MI.

Key Responsibilities

Automotive Build & Technical Support

• Support prototype, pilot, and development vehicle builds, assembly, modifications, and rework
• Perform and/or assist with mechanical and electrical vehicle assembly
• Troubleshoot mechanical and electrical systems, including wiring, sensors, lighting, ECUs, and power systems
• Assemble, remove, install, and modify interior and exterior vehicle components such as dashboards, doors, panels, consoles, and related systems
• Perform fabrication, mock-ups, rework, and modifications based on engineering requirements and drawings
• Safely operate hand tools, power tools, and applicable shop equipment
• Read and follow engineering drawings, service manuals, build instructions, schematics, and technical specifications
• Identify build issues, fitment concerns, process gaps, and design challenges and communicate findings to engineering teams
• Support vehicle testing, validation, troubleshooting, and engineering development activities as needed

Technical Writing & Process Documentation

• Develop, write, revise, and maintain detailed work instructions, build procedures, SOPs, process documentation, and technical content
• Observe and participate in vehicle build and engineering processes and translate those activities into clear, step-by-step instructions
• Document mechanical and electrical assembly, installation, modification, troubleshooting, and rework procedures
• Capture critical information including:

  • Parts and components
  • Step-by-step procedures
  • Engineering requirements
  • Safety considerations
  • Quality checkpoints
  • Troubleshooting information
  • Photos, diagrams, drawings, and other visual references
• Review existing work instructions and identify missing, outdated, or unclear information
• Work directly with technicians and engineers to verify that documentation accurately reflects the actual build process
• Update documentation as components, tooling, processes, or engineering requirements change
• Document lessons learned, build issues, corrective actions, and process improvements
• Maintain document revisions, version control, and technical records
• Ensure documentation is clear enough for another technician to successfully repeat the process
• Participate in engineering meetings, build reviews, and process discussions to capture and communicate technical information

Required Qualifications

• 3–5+ years of experience in automotive technician, prototype build, vehicle build, fabrication, manufacturing, engineering support, or a closely related technical role
• Hands-on experience with automotive mechanical systems, vehicle components, assembly, modification, or repair
• Experience working in or supporting prototype builds, engineering builds, OEM, Tier 1, Tier 2, or automotive development environments
• Demonstrated experience creating, maintaining, or contributing to technical documentation such as:

  • Process documentation
  • Technical manuals
• Ability to take a hands-on technical process and convert it into clear, accurate, step-by-step written instructions
• Ability to read and interpret engineering drawings, schematics, service manuals, specifications, and build documentation
• Experience using hand and power tools safely in a shop or build environment
• Strong mechanical aptitude and technical troubleshooting skills
• Strong written communication, grammar, organization, and attention to detail
• Comfortable working directly with engineers, technicians, manufacturing personnel, and quality teams
• Proficiency with Microsoft Office, particularly Word, Excel, Outlook, and PowerPoint
• Ability to manage documentation revisions while supporting active build programs
• Comfortable working in a fast-paced, onsite engineering and prototype environment
• Reliable transportation to Plymouth, MI

Preferred / Nice to Have

• Previous experience as an Automotive Build Technician, Prototype Technician, Engineering Technician, Automotive Technical Writer, or Service/Repair Documentation Specialist
• Experience developing automotive work instructions, assembly procedures, service manuals, or repair procedures
• ASE or Michigan Mechanic Certification
• Experience with automotive electronics, wiring, sensors, ECUs, diagnostic equipment, or data acquisition systems
• Hands-on fabrication, mock-up, custom build, or rework experience
• Experience with vehicle testing and validation
• Experience incorporating photos, diagrams, engineering drawings, or other visual aids into technical documentation
• Experience with document revision control and engineering change processes
• Familiarity with Teamcenter, PLM software, document management systems, or similar engineering systems
• Quality, process validation, or continuous improvement experience
• Experience developing training materials or training other technicians
• Service manual writing experience
• Motorsports, racecar, custom vehicle, or specialty build experience

Ideal Candidate

The strongest candidate will be someone who can understand and perform the work—not simply write about it.

We are looking for an individual who can work alongside technicians and engineers, understand how a component or vehicle is being assembled or modified, identify important process details, and then create documentation that allows another technician to accurately repeat that process.
