What Is a Systems Architect?

A systems architect is responsible for the design of complex network and database systems that support a company’s daily functions and activities. As a systems architect, your duties are to study your company’s use cases, design computer network systems that meet those needs, optimize existing systems architecture, troubleshoot and fix issues, and collaborate with other systems architects and software engineers on project development and implementation. Your work includes system servers, databases, software applications, and more. You need a strong computer engineering background to be an effective systems architect.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a Systems Architect, and why are they important?

To thrive as a Systems Architect, you need expertise in systems design, enterprise architecture frameworks, and a strong background in computer science or IT, often supported by a relevant degree. Familiarity with tools like UML, TOGAF, cloud platforms (e.g., AWS, Azure), and certifications such as AWS Certified Solutions Architect are typically required. Outstanding problem-solving, communication, and leadership skills help in translating business requirements into technical solutions and collaborating across teams. These competencies are crucial for designing scalable, secure, and efficient systems that align with organizational goals.

How does a Systems Architect typically collaborate with other IT teams during large-scale projects?

A Systems Architect works closely with various IT teams such as software developers, network engineers, and project managers to ensure that system designs align with organizational goals and technical requirements. They often facilitate communication between stakeholders, translate business needs into technical specifications, and oversee the integration of different system components. Regular meetings, design reviews, and documentation updates are common, helping to identify potential issues early and maintain alignment across the project lifecycle. This collaborative approach is crucial for delivering scalable, reliable, and secure systems.

What are Systems Architects?

Systems Architects are professionals who design and oversee the structure of complex IT systems, ensuring that hardware, software, and network components work together efficiently. They analyze organizational needs and create high-level solutions that align with business goals, often acting as a bridge between technical teams and management. Systems Architects are responsible for creating blueprints, setting standards, and guiding the implementation of new technologies or upgrades. Their work is crucial for building scalable, secure, and reliable systems that support an organization's operations.

What is the difference between Systems Architect vs Network Engineer?

AspectSystems ArchitectNetwork Engineer
Required CredentialsBachelor's in CS or IT, certifications like TOGAF, AWS, or Cisco (CCNA)Bachelor's in CS, IT, or related field, Cisco certifications (CCNA, CCNP)
Work EnvironmentDesigning and planning overall system architecture, collaborating with multiple teamsImplementing, configuring, and maintaining network infrastructure
Employer & Industry UsageTech firms, large enterprises, consultingTelecom, data centers, enterprise networks
Common Search & Comparison IntentUnderstanding role differences, career paths, required skillsComparing network roles, certifications, responsibilities

While both roles require technical expertise and certifications, a Systems Architect focuses on designing comprehensive IT systems and infrastructure, whereas a Network Engineer specializes in implementing and managing network hardware and connectivity. The choice depends on whether you prefer system design or network implementation within the IT field.

Job description

We are seeking a highly experienced Systems Architect to lead the development and integration of complex Systems of Systems (SoS) spanning space, air, and ground domains in support of the U.S. Space Force. This role operates within a classified (SAP) environment and requires deep mission engineering expertise, operational understanding of joint warfighting, and the ability to translate commander’s intent into executable architectural solutions.

The ideal candidate understands how to move from kill chains to kill webs, decompose operational vignettes into technical requirements, and architect resilient C2-enabled ecosystems that connect sensors, decision-makers, and effectors across domains.

Program Overview

Location: El Segundo, CA

Clearance: Must possess an active U.S. Government Top Secret clearance and eligible for SCI, which only a U.S. citizen can obtain

What You’ll Do

Mission Engineering & Architecture Development

  • Lead development of Mission Engineering frameworks supporting multi-domain operations (MDO).
  • Develop and analyze DODAF products (OV, SV, CV, DIV, StdV, etc.) to capture operational, system, and capability views.
  • Decompose operational vignettes and mission threads into actionable architectural artifacts and technical requirements.
  • Translate commander’s intent and CONOPS into system-level and SoS-level architecture designs.
  • Develop mission thread analyses to identify operational seams, latency risks, and interoperability gaps.

Systems of Systems (SoS) Integration

  • Architect integrated solutions linking space, air, and ground platforms across sensor-to-shooter ecosystems.
  • Transition traditional linear kill chains into resilient, distributed kill webs, identifying redundancies and cross-domain opportunities.
  • Define and evaluate C2 linkages across sensors, decision nodes, and effectors.
  • Identify architecture gaps, technical risks, and integration challenges across domains.
  • Conduct risk assessments related to interoperability, latency, resiliency, and cyber vulnerabilities.

Space & C2 Integration

  • Support integration efforts within United States Space Force mission areas.
  • Architect solutions aligned with Department of the Air Force Battle Network Integration priorities.
  • Support integration across Nexus teams, including DN1, MILSATCOM, and DAF Battle Network stakeholders.
  • Develop and assess Universal C2 standards, Interface Control Documents (ICDs), APIs, and space messaging architectures.
  • Ensure interoperability between MILSATCOM, tactical data links, and joint C2 ecosystems.

Classified Environment Execution

  • Operate effectively within SAP and highly compartmented environments.
  • Ensure strict adherence to OPSEC requirements.
  • Collaborate with government, FFRDC, and industry partners in secure facilities.

What We’re Looking For

Required Qualifications

  • Active TS/SCI clearance with SAP eligibility.
  • 10+ years of experience in systems engineering or systems architecture within DoD programs.
  • Demonstrated experience developing DODAF architectural artifacts.
  • Experience with Systems of Systems (SoS) and mission thread analysis.
  • Operational understanding of joint warfighting and multi-domain operations.
  • Experience linking C2 systems to sensors and effectors across domains.
  • Strong understanding of mission engineering models and analysis methods.
  • Experience identifying technical, operational, and integration risks in complex architectures.
  • Familiarity with MILSATCOM and space-ground integration environments.
  • Ability to work onsite in classified facilities
