While both roles involve communication and customer service, a Switchboard Operator primarily manages incoming calls and directs them within organizations like hospitals or hotels. A Receptionist handles visitor interactions, administrative tasks, and front desk duties. The roles overlap in communication skills but differ in focus and responsibilities.
A switchboard operator answers the phone and directs calls at an organization. They are often trained to answer general, company-related questions from incoming callers. Switchboard operators are usually the first point of contact at a sizable corporation and are expected to transfer calls to the appropriate department or individual in a polite and timely manner. A switchboard operator’s primary job description consists of answering and transferring calls, though they may have many other job duties as well. They are trusted with numerous phone lines and extensions and are instructed to keep a detailed record of all incoming and transferred call information. Switchboard operators may be called upon to perform clerical and administrative tasks or even receptionist duties, such as checking in clients for appointments. In hospital settings, switchboard operators are required to learn the use of pager systems to alert doctors of incoming messages. They may also be asked to register patients into facility rooms before an examination. In some cases, switchboard operators are even required to act as emergency first responders and direct urgent medical or safety-related calls to the appropriate party.

Duties, Expectations and Essential Functions:
Primary assignment is in the Bacchus 1800 Gallon Mix/Cast area performing activities and tasks associated with the manufacturing of rocket motors.
Area specific essential functions, responsibilities and duties include, but are not limited to:
Demonstrated skills and aptitude to safely lead and efficiently perform tasks associated with 1800 gallon mixing and casting various rocket motors.
Responsibilities include safely conducting manual hands on activities involving energetic ingredients and propellant.
Demonstrated skills to operate overhead cranes, hand tools and remotely operated equipment.
Demonstrated ability to safely perform spotting operations and demonstrated willingness to follow the directions of a spotter.
Physical ability to individually lift objects up to 50 pounds
Ability to read, clearly interpret and accurately follow standard work and other written instructions.
Must be willing to perform shift work and work on weekends and holidays. Must be willing to work overtime as required.
Complete and sustain sound proficiencies in all required training, including all Quality Assurance MTI (manufacture to inspect) skill based training.
Must be able to process and apply basic math and measurement functions.
Other duties as assigned by leadership.
First Operator essential functions and expectations include, but are not limited to:
Accountable to conduct and/or lead the training of new and lower classification operators through on-the-job coaching and mentoring. Responsible to ensure trainee's and junior employees follow procedures.
Effectively and constructively communicate with all levels of personnel including customers, leadership, coworkers and support team members
Actively engage in and lead or promote PES improvement activities, process/procedure improvements, standard work instructions and the global improvement of Operations
Be an advocate for our safety culture. Engage, promote and lead our teams in SIS activities, hazard abatements, OP-E, Take Two, etc.
Demonstrate the initiative and ability to become knowledgeable and proficient in all area processes and support all levels of hands-on operations
Guide and positively influence coworkers and others to enhance the safety, quality, cost and scheduling of their team
Assists leadership in making job assignments and achieving performance standards
Other duties as assigned by leadership
Bids shall be awarded to the senior qualified employee. In selecting the senior qualified employee, the Company will take into account the employee's ability to do the work, ability to perform the essential functions of the job, specific job experience on similar or related jobs, past job performance and such factors that would contribute to safe workmanship. In the event insufficient bids are received for the opening, the position will be filled in accordance with other provisions of this Agreement. Employee may be required to work shift work, weekends, holidays, and overtime. Upon successful bid award, employee will be restricted from bidding in accordance with the current union contract.
