Duties
Help
You will serve as a MARINE INSPECTOR (SVO) and be responsible for the implementation of the unit's Marine Inspector qualification program, and serves as a subject matter expert, providing technical expertise, training leadership and compliance of duties related to maritime safety, vessel inspection, and vessel manning laws, regulations, treaties and international conventions.
Being a Coast Guard civilian makes you a valuable member of the Coast Guard team. Typical work assignments include:
- Serves as senior USCG marine inspector, leads vessel examinations and inspections, including highly complex or large-scale domestic vessel projects
- Serves as the unit's subject matter expert in developing in-house U.S. Coast Guard marine inspection training, on-the-job training, and qualification processes. Acts as co-chair of the unit's marine inspection qualification training board
- Serves as the senior USCG marine inspections Verifying Officer for Marine Inspector/Port State Control competencies, ensuring qualification competencies are attainable and sustainable at the assigned feeder port. Makes suitability determinations for verifying officers
- Organizes, implements, and evaluates all products associated with the Marine Inspector Performance Support Architecture, including Advanced Marine Inspector system training, eLearning, structured on-the-job training, and Performance Task Checklists

Qualifications
To qualify at the GS-13 grade level, your resume must demonstrate at least one (1) full year of specialized experience equivalent to at least the GS-12 grade level in the federal sector. Specialized experience is experience that has equipped you with the ability, skill, and knowledge to successfully perform the duties of this position and is typically in or related to this line of work. Examples of specialized experience include performing the following types of tasks on a regular basis.
- Leading and training USCG marine inspections personnel on conducting vessel examinations and inspections focused on vessel compliance with applicable international conventions and domestic regulations (navigation, intra-vessel communications and alarms, lifesaving, firefighting, and pollution prevention systems)
- Acting as a USCG marine inspector verifying officer for previously attained USCG marine inspector qualifications, serving as a board member on marine inspector qualification boards, and implementing and/or supporting the Marine Inspector Performance Support Architecture (MIPSA)
- Conducting vessel examinations and inspections as a designated USCG Journeyman Marine Inspector (JMI) or USCG Advanced Journeyman Marine Inspector (AJMI)
- Utilizing the Marine Information Technologies for Safety and Law Enforcement (MISLE) system to review and document vessel USCG examination and inspections records. Familiarization with training and competency record keeping for USCG marine inspectors
