As of Aug 20, 2026, the average yearly pay for surplus lines producer in the United States is $105,209.00, according to ZipRecruiter salary data. Most workers in this role earn between $71,500.00 and $141,500.00 per year, depending on experience, location, and employer.

What is a surplus lines producer?

Surplus Lines Producers are licensed insurance professionals who help clients obtain insurance coverage from non-admitted insurers—companies not licensed in a particular state but legally allowed to provide specialized or high-risk insurance. These producers play a crucial role when standard insurers cannot or will not provide coverage due to unique or high-risk circumstances. Surplus Lines Producers must follow specific regulations and often work through surplus lines brokers to ensure all legal requirements are met. Their expertise helps individuals and businesses access insurance solutions that fall outside the traditional market.

How does a surplus lines producer typically collaborate with retail insurance agents and underwriters?

A Surplus Lines Producer often acts as an intermediary between retail insurance agents—who have direct contact with clients—and surplus lines carriers or underwriters. The producer helps retail agents find coverage for unique or high-risk accounts that standard insurers cannot accommodate, advising on policy options and compliance with surplus lines regulations. Collaboration requires strong communication skills, attention to detail, and the ability to educate agents and clients about specialized products and the associated regulatory requirements. Frequent coordination with underwriters is also necessary to negotiate terms and ensure accurate risk assessment.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a surplus lines producer, and why are they important?

To thrive as a Surplus Lines Producer, you need strong knowledge of insurance markets, underwriting practices, and state surplus lines regulations, typically supported by relevant insurance licenses and experience. Familiarity with surplus lines filing systems, rating software, and customer relationship management (CRM) tools is commonly required. Excellent negotiation, problem-solving, and relationship-building skills are crucial for connecting clients with appropriate coverage solutions. These competencies ensure compliance, expand market opportunities, and deliver tailored risk solutions in a specialized insurance sector.

What is the difference between Surplus Lines Producer vs Licensed Insurance Agent?

AspectSurplus Lines ProducerLicensed Insurance Agent
CredentialsState-specific surplus lines license, often similar to standard insurance licenseState insurance license for general insurance sales
Work EnvironmentSpecializes in non-admitted, surplus lines insurance for unique or high-risk coverageWorks with admitted insurance policies for standard coverage
Industry UsageUsed in specialty, high-risk, or hard-to-place insurance marketsUsed across broad insurance markets for typical policies

The main difference is that a Surplus Lines Producer specializes in placing insurance coverage that cannot be obtained through admitted carriers, often dealing with high-risk or unique policies. A Licensed Insurance Agent handles standard, admitted insurance policies. Both roles require licensing, but Surplus Lines Producers focus on non-admitted markets, making their expertise crucial for specialized coverage needs.
