Job description

General Description Under direct supervision, develops and presents Children's and Young Adult programs up to 17 years of age for the County Library System, and assists with routine reference and circulation duties as assigned. This position is not assigned by building or particular location and requires the flexibility to work at various Library branches as assigned. Requires evening and weekend work.

Essential Functions Plans, coordinates and presents Children's programs for youth, ages 0-17. Delivers early childhood programming at all library branches, including the development and preparation of related program materials. Selects age-appropriate library materials and books for use in programs; selects props and materials related to storybooks for use as visual aids; selects songs and fingerplays; selects art projects, etc.

Obtains all program supplies necessary for youth programming. Identifies, selects and serves as the primary coordinator for special guests participating in youth programs and activities. Recommends children's materials to staff members responsible for collection development.

Provides reference and reading advisory services for children. Maintains and shelves children's materials. Maintains statistics for all children's programs.

Maintains and organizes files related to youth programs and events to support documentation and future planning. Assists with Adult programs as requested. Prepares and/or assists in preparing rooms for programs.

Prepares promotional/informational fliers and posters; markets in accordance with the Library marketing procedures, which may include sending information to schools, newspapers, and/or other local media outlets. Delivers program materials to branch libraries. Arranges book displays for a variety of events throughout the year.

Attends staff meetings. Attends Training to maintain knowledge of current theories and trends in public Library operations and technology. Performs a variety of routine clerical duties as required, which may include but are not limited to copying and filing documents, answering the telephone, etc.

Provides professional and courteous customer relations at all times. Assists supervisor with fund raising activities for children's programming; including early childhood programming (year round ages 0-5), summer Library program (June -July ages 6-11) and programs for young adults (ages 12-17). Prepares calendar of events for year-round children's programming.

Prepares and presents brief presentations for local civic groups on children's programming under the direction of the assigned supervisor. Interacts and communicates with various groups and individuals such as the immediate supervisor, co-workers, residents and visitors, volunteers, students, community service workers, vendors, FOL Groups and the general public. Supervises the work of volunteers and students, as assigned.

Assists with circulation duties as needed. Maintains a neat and clean workplace. Runs errands as needed.

Operates a variety of equipment which may include a vehicle, audio-visual equipment, telephone, etc.; utilizes artist/craft tools and supplies. Attends and remains at work regularly and adheres to policies and procedures regarding absenteeism and tardiness. Provides adequate notice to higher management with respect to vacation time and leave requests

Must be motivated and a self-starter. Performs related duties as required. (These essential functions are not a complete statement of all duties required of the job.

Minimum Education & Experience Requires a Bachelor's Degree in an Educational field or Library Science supplemented by one (1) to two (2) years of experience working with school-age children or an equivalent combination of education, training and experience that provides the required knowledge, skills and abilities. Must possess a valid State Driver's License. Knowledge, Skills & Abilities Knowledge of the methods, policies and procedures of the Nassau County Public Library system and County as they pertain to the performance duties of the Youth Librarian

Knowledge of the methods and practices of public Library operations, including circulation and reference services. Knowledge of the Dewey Decimal System. Knowledge of reference topics and is able to assist patrons in locating and researching information as needed.

Ability to consistently provide quality customer service to patrons and staff as required. Knowledge of child development and its implications for the Public Library services. Ability to plan effective Children's programming.

Ability to present age-appropriate and engaging programs to children. Ability to communicate well with children, students, their parents, care givers, agency directors, volunteers and FOL Groups. Knowledge of modern office practices and technology.

Knowledge of proper English usage, punctuation, spelling and grammar. Ability to perform required mathematical calculations. Ability to type and enter computer data accurately at a rate sufficient for the successful performance of assigned duties.

Ability to operate and maintain a variety of office equipment as necessary in the performance of daily activities. Skill in applying a responsible attention to detail as necessary in preparing reports and records. Ability to read and interpret various materials pertaining to the responsibilities of the job.

Ability to take the initiative to complete the duties of the position with little supervision. Ability to use independent judgment in performing routine and non-routine tasks. Ability to offer training and assistance to co-workers and employees of other departments as required.

Ability to learn and utilize new skills and information to improve job performance and efficiency. Ability to perform duties in a courteous manner, with the utmost integrity in the best interest of the public. Knowledge of emergent literacy skills and its implication for Public Library services.

Ability to work under stressful conditions as required. Knows how to react calmly and quickly in emergency situations. ESSENTIAL PHYSICAL SKILLS: Task may require extended periods of time at a keyboard, workstation or standing.
