What are student legal interns?

Student legal interns are law students who work in legal settings, such as law firms, government agencies, or nonprofit organizations, to gain practical experience while still in school. They assist attorneys with legal research, drafting documents, attending court proceedings, and other tasks related to the legal process. This hands-on experience helps them apply their classroom knowledge to real-world legal issues and prepares them for their future careers as lawyers.

What is the difference between Student Legal Intern vs Law Clerk?

AspectStudent Legal InternLaw Clerk

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a Student Legal Intern, and why are they important?

A Student Legal Intern should possess a solid understanding of legal principles, strong research and writing abilities, and typically be enrolled in or have completed law school coursework. Familiarity with legal research databases like Westlaw or LexisNexis, citation formats, and document management software is vital. Attention to detail, professionalism, and strong communication skills help interns excel in supporting attorneys and engaging with clients. These competencies ensure accurate legal work, effective team contribution, and a strong foundation for future legal practice.

What types of projects or cases might a Student Legal Intern typically work on during their internship?

As a Student Legal Intern, you can expect to assist with a wide range of tasks such as conducting legal research, drafting memoranda, preparing case summaries, and supporting attorneys in client meetings or court proceedings. Projects often include reviewing case files, helping with discovery, and sometimes observing or participating in negotiations and hearings. The exact nature of your responsibilities will depend on the organization—whether it's a law firm, government agency, or nonprofit—but you'll typically gain practical exposure to real-world legal processes and issues, making it an excellent learning opportunity.

Job description

About Alliance Technical Group

Alliance Technical Group is a leading environmental compliance, testing, and monitoring services company serving clients across the oil and gas, energy, manufacturing, data center, and chemical industries, among others. We take a technology-first, client-centered approach to solving complex environmental and regulatory challenges, and our Legal Department plays a critical role in supporting that mission.

Position Overview

Alliance Technical Group is seeking a motivated and detail-oriented law student intern to join our in-house Legal Department. This is a hands-on opportunity to work alongside experienced legal professionals in a dynamic, fast-growing environmental services company. The intern will gain meaningful exposure to corporate transactional work, litigation support, and regulatory compliance, all within an industry at the intersection of environmental law, energy, and technology.

This position is open to law students at any stage of their legal education (1L, 2L, or 3L; rising law school entrants).

Key Responsibilities

Contracts and Transactional Work

  • Assist in drafting, reviewing, and summarizing contracts, master service agreements, NDAs, and vendor agreements
  • Support due diligence efforts related to mergers, acquisitions, and business development activities
  • Maintain and organize contract management systems and templates

Litigation Support

  • Assist with research and preparation of legal memoranda related to disputes or claims
  • Help organize and manage litigation files, discovery materials, and case timelines
  • Coordinate with outside counsel on active matters as needed

Compliance and Regulatory

  • Research federal and state environmental regulations (EPA, Clean Air Act, Clean Water Act, etc.) relevant to Alliance's service lines
  • Support preparation of compliance reports, regulatory filings, and internal policy documentation
  • Monitor regulatory developments affecting the environmental services industry

General Legal Support

  • Conduct legal research and prepare summaries on a variety of topics
  • Assist with corporate governance matters and maintain corporate records
  • Support the Legal Department on special projects as assigned

Qualifications

  • Currently enrolled in an ABA-accredited law school (1L, 2L, or 3L)
  • Strong legal research and writing skills
  • Ability to manage multiple projects and prioritize effectively
  • High attention to detail and commitment to accuracy
  • Intellectual curiosity and a proactive, solutions-oriented mindset
  • Interest in environmental law, regulatory compliance, or corporate law is a plus
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Office Suite; experience with legal research platforms (Westlaw, LexisNexis) preferred

What You Will Gain

  • Direct exposure to in-house legal practice at a growing national company
  • Experience across multiple legal disciplines, including transactional, litigation, and regulatory work
  • Mentorship from seasoned legal professionals
  • A front-row seat to the environmental services industry and its evolving regulatory landscape

Location, Schedule and Rate

This position is based in Louisville, Kentucky. Hybrid arrangements may be considered depending on law school schedule. Part-time or summer full-time schedules are available. This is a non-exempt role at $18/hr.

Alliance Technical Group is an Equal Opportunity Employer. All qualified applicants will receive consideration for employment without regard to race, color, sex, sexual orientation, gender identity, religion, national origin, disability, veteran status, age, marital status, pregnancy, genetic information, or other legally protected status.
