Startup Recruiters often face challenges such as rapidly changing hiring needs, limited employer brand recognition, and high competition for top talent. To address these, recruiters must be highly agile, leveraging creative sourcing strategies and building strong relationships with candidates to showcase a startup's unique culture and growth opportunities. Working closely with founders and team leads is common, requiring excellent communication and adaptability. Many recruiters also utilize data-driven approaches and networking events to build talent pipelines. Overcoming these challenges helps startups attract the right candidates quickly, ensuring successful team growth.

What is a Startup Recruiter job?

A Startup Recruiter is responsible for sourcing, attracting, and hiring top talent for early-stage or fast-growing companies. Unlike traditional recruiters, they often work in a fast-paced, resource-constrained environment where hiring the right team is critical to the company's success. They manage the entire hiring process, from identifying candidates and conducting interviews to negotiating offers. Startup Recruiters also help build company culture and ensure new hires align with the company's vision and growth objectives.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive in the Startup Recruiter position, and why are they important?

To thrive as a Startup Recruiter, you need strong talent sourcing skills, knowledge of recruitment processes, and familiarity with dynamic startup environments, often supported by a bachelor's degree in human resources or a related field. Familiarity with applicant tracking systems (ATS), sourcing tools like LinkedIn Recruiter, and data-driven recruitment platforms is important. Outstanding communication, adaptability, and relationship-building skills help candidates stand out in this fast-paced, ever-changing environment. These abilities enable effective identification and engagement of top talent, which is critical for scaling startups efficiently and competitively.

Atomic Machines

Emeryville, CA • On-site

Job description

Atomic Machines is ushering in a new era of micromanufacturing with its Matter Compiler technology platform. This platform enables new classes of micromachines to be designed and built by providing manufacturing processes and a materials library that are inaccessible to semiconductor manufacturing methods. It unlocks MEMS manufacturing not only for device classes that could never be produced by semiconductor methods, but also for entirely new categories. Furthermore, this digital platform is fully programmable in the way 3D printing is digital-but whereas 3D printing produces parts of a single material using a single process, the Matter Compiler technology platform is a multi-process, multi-material system: bits and raw materials go in, and complete, functional micromachines come out. The Atomic Machines team has also created an exciting first device-made possible only through the Matter Compiler technology platform-that we will be unveiling to the world soon.

Our offices are in Emeryville and Santa Clara, California.

About the Role

We're looking for a recruiter who is excellent at the fundamentals: finding the right people, getting them to respond, keeping them engaged, and closing great hires. You'll work across technical and non-technical roles at a high-bar, fast-moving startup - partnering closely with hiring managers and owning the search from first outreach through offer.

What You'll Do
  • Read a job description and quickly identify, source, and reach out to the most relevant candidates in the market.
  • Write compelling outreach messages that earn responses from passive candidates and generate genuine interest in Atomic Machines.
  • Deliver a best-in-class candidate experience - keeping candidates informed, sharing and gathering feedback throughout the process, and treating every interaction as a reflection of the company.
  • Keep hiring managers updated on pipeline status and surface challenges early so the search strategy can adapt.
  • Recognize when the role scope or candidate profile needs to shift based on market realities - and bring that perspective to the hiring manager proactively.
  • Solicit referrals and activate hiring managers as active sourcing partners, not just approvers.
  • Apply a high bar consistently when evaluating candidates, using first-principles thinking rather than pattern-matching on pedigree.
What You'll Need
  • Prior experience recruiting for technical roles at a technical company.
  • Proven ability to source and engage passive candidates through targeted, personalized outreach - not post-and-pray.
  • Strong written communication skills - your messages get replies.
  • A track record of keeping candidates warm and informed throughout a process, with clear and proactive communication.
  • The judgment to recognize when a search isn't working and the confidence to recommend a course correction.
  • Experience working closely with hiring managers as a true partner - looping them in on pipeline health, pulling in referrals, and aligning on what great looks like.
  • A first-principles approach to candidate evaluation - you assess people on the actual requirements of the role, not just resume brand names.
  • Bachelor's degree required.
  • Willingness to work onsite in Emeryville or Santa Clara.
