What is a staff electrical engineer?

Staff Electrical Engineers are senior-level professionals responsible for designing, developing, and overseeing complex electrical systems or components. They often lead engineering teams, provide technical guidance, and ensure projects meet quality and safety standards. Their work may include circuit design, power distribution, and troubleshooting electrical issues across a variety of industries. With extensive experience, they bridge the gap between engineering teams and management, contributing to both technical innovation and strategic decision-making.

How does a staff electrical engineer typically collaborate with cross-functional teams during product development?

As a Staff Electrical Engineer, you will regularly work with cross-functional teams that include mechanical engineers, software developers, project managers, and manufacturing specialists. Your role often involves translating electrical requirements into system-level solutions, participating in design reviews, and troubleshooting multidisciplinary issues. Effective communication and coordination are essential, as you'll be responsible for ensuring that electrical components integrate smoothly with other subsystems. This collaborative environment helps drive innovation and ensures that products meet both technical and business objectives.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a staff electrical engineer, and why are they important?

To thrive as a Staff Electrical Engineer, you need a solid background in electrical engineering principles, circuit design, and project management, usually supported by a bachelor's or master's degree in electrical engineering. Familiarity with industry-standard tools such as CAD software (e.g., AutoCAD, Altium Designer), simulation tools (e.g., SPICE), and relevant certifications like Professional Engineer (PE) licensure is often expected. Strong problem-solving skills, leadership abilities, and effective communication are essential soft skills for collaborating across teams and mentoring junior engineers. These competencies enable Staff Electrical Engineers to deliver innovative solutions, ensure project quality, and drive technical excellence within their organizations.

What are the highest paid staff electrical engineers?

Highest paid staff electrical engineers typically earn salaries exceeding $150,000 annually, especially those with advanced skills in power systems, control systems, or specialized certifications like PE. Salaries vary based on industry, experience, and location, with roles in aerospace, defense, and technology sectors often offering the highest compensation.

This role is responsible for delivering high-quality, custom-engineered solutions that meet customer specifications while ensuring compliance, manufacturability, and lead time targets.

The Staff Electrical Engineer will leverage deep expertise in power systems and load bank applications to drive technical excellence, improve engineering efficiency, and standardize solutions where possible. This role plays a critical part in bridging customer requirements, engineering execution, and production readiness.

We are looking for people who believe in our guiding principles and values of:

  • Integrity – We’re honest, transparent, and committed to doing what’s right.
  • Customer focus – We have relentless focus on our customers and their success.
  • Right with speed – We use good judgement, make thoughtful decisions quickly, and execute them with purpose and intensity.

    • Ensure designs meet UL, NEC, and customer-specific requirements, balancing safety, performance, and cost.
    • Partner with Cx, Sales, Application Engineering, and Operations to improve quote accuracy, reduce cycle time, and enable scalable execution.
    • Lead and participate in design reviews and problem-solving efforts to reduce rework and improve first-pass yield.
    • Identify opportunities to standardize recurring designs and improve engineering efficiency without compromising ETO flexibility.
    • Provide technical mentorship and guidance to engineers and cross functional partners, helping elevate design quality, consistency, and first-pass accuracy.
    • Drive a mindset of continuous improvement and practical innovation, identifying opportunities to streamline designs, standardize solutions, and improve engineering efficiency in an ETO environment.
Qualifications:
  • Bachelors degree in Electrical and/or Electronics Engineering
  • 10+ Years of experience in electrical engineering, preferably electrical power systems engineering, load banks, or generator support applications.
  • Strong experience in ETO or custom-engineered environments, translating customer requirements into deliverable designs.
  • Demonstrated expertise in power systems, load calculations, and electrical design for industrial applications.
  • Experience with equipment such as load banks, power distribution systems, or similar products.
  • Working knowledge of applicable UL standards and NEC requirements.
  • Familiarity with NFPA 110
