The ideal candidate is a hands-on engineering leader with deep PHP and large-scale backend expertise who thrives guiding senior engineers without losing touch with the code. This is a highly visible role in a high-growth technology company, which will require strong organizational instincts, the ability to navigate a mature monolithic codebase while driving modernization, and the leadership presence to align execution across multiple product teams. Key Responsibilities
  • Lead and develop a distributed team of 8+ engineers across Identity Management, Payments & Billing, and Internal Admin Platform; spanning junior to senior-level talent
  • Drive engineering execution: sprint planning, technical prioritization, and delivery across multiple concurrent workstreams
  • Engage deeply with the PHP monolith; code reviewing, architectural decision-making, and guiding incremental modernization without disrupting production systems
  • Build and maintain a high-performance team culture through 1:1s, career development, and structured feedback loops
  • Partner closely with product, design, and adjacent engineering leadership to align on roadmap priorities and technical strategy
  • Develop team processes that balance velocity, quality, and operational stability at scale
  • Own hiring and headcount planning for your teams, including defining roles and evaluating candidates
  • Perform technical risk assessments and guide teams through complex system changes; including IAM/SCIM integrations, billing infrastructure, and account lifecycle work

Qualifications
  • 5+ years of hands-on PHP development experience, including fluency with large-scale monolithic applications
  • 3+ years of engineering management experience, with a track record of developing engineers and delivering complex projects
  • Strong working knowledge of MySQL, query optimization, and data modeling at scale
  • Experience with identity, authentication, or billing systems: IAM, OAuth, SSO, or subscription/payment platforms a strong plus
  • Demonstrated ability to lead technical teams through architectural evolution without disrupting reliability
  • Comfortable operating in a high-ownership, low-process engineering culture where context matters more than ceremony
  • Excellent communication skills, able to translate technical complexity to stakeholders and business priorities to engineers
  • Bachelor's degree in Computer Science or equivalent practical experience

Compensation
$140,000 - $155,000
