What is software development?

Software development is the process of designing, creating, testing, and maintaining computer programs or applications. It involves a range of tasks including writing code, debugging, and collaborating with other team members to solve problems and deliver functional software solutions. Software development can encompass everything from mobile apps and websites to large-scale enterprise systems. Developers use various programming languages and tools depending on the project requirements.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a software developer, and why are they important?

To thrive as a Software Developer, you need strong programming skills (such as Python, Java, or C++), problem-solving abilities, and typically a degree in computer science or a related field. Familiarity with version control systems like Git, integrated development environments (IDEs), and sometimes certifications in cloud platforms or specific frameworks are often required. Collaboration, adaptability, and effective communication are essential soft skills for working in diverse development teams and navigating project requirements. These skills and qualities ensure efficient code development, seamless teamwork, and successful delivery of robust software solutions.

What are some common challenges software developers face when working on collaborative projects, and how can these be addressed?

Software developers often encounter challenges such as coordinating code changes, managing merge conflicts, and ensuring consistent communication across the team during collaborative projects. To address these issues, teams typically use version control systems like Git, establish clear coding standards, and hold regular stand-up meetings to keep everyone aligned. Additionally, utilizing code review processes and project management tools helps maintain quality and transparency, making collaboration smoother and more efficient.

What is the difference between Software Development vs Software Engineering?

AspectSoftware DevelopmentSoftware Engineering
CredentialsTypically requires a degree in computer science or related field, coding certificationsSimilar credentials, often includes certifications in software engineering principles
Work EnvironmentDeveloping, coding, and testing software applicationsDesigning, analyzing, and managing software projects and systems
Industry UsageCommonly used in tech companies, startups, and software firmsUsed in larger organizations, focusing on system architecture and process
Search & Comparison IntentFocuses on coding and application creationEmphasizes system design and engineering principles

While both roles involve software creation, Software Development primarily focuses on coding and building applications, whereas Software Engineering encompasses designing, analyzing, and managing complex software systems with a broader engineering perspective.

What exactly do software developers do?

Software developers design, write, test, and maintain computer programs and applications using programming languages like Java, Python, or C++. They analyze user needs, create technical specifications, and collaborate with teams to build functional software solutions. Strong problem-solving skills and knowledge of development tools are essential in this role.

What jobs can a software developer do?

A software developer can work in roles such as front-end developer, back-end developer, full-stack developer, mobile app developer, or software engineer. These positions involve designing, coding, testing, and maintaining software applications using programming languages like Java, Python, or JavaScript, often requiring knowledge of development tools and frameworks.

Job description

About us

One team. Global challenges. Infinite opportunities. At Viasat, we’re on a mission to deliver connections with the capacity to change the world. For more than 35 years, Viasat has helped shape how consumers, businesses, governments and militaries around the globe communicate. We’re looking for people who think big, act fearlessly, and create an inclusive environment that drives positive impact to join our team.

What you'll do

You will lead the Connectivity Management team within Viasat's Commercial Aviation platform, responsible for the software that gets passengers and crew devices onto the network aboard commercial aircraft. Your team owns the core onboard session management stack running on the Mobility Access Server. When a passenger mobile device connects mid-flight, your software is what makes it happen.

This is a multi-year architectural modernization, not a maintenance role – you'll help shape how a mission-critical, resource-constrained system evolves in production.

What you'll lead:

  • A geographically distributed team of engineers and architecture stakeholders

  • Design, implementation, and production ownership of onboard connectivity services

  • A multi-year architectural modernization of the session management stack

  • Quality improvements: automated testing pipelines to catch session-management faults before they reach aircraft

  • Observability: per-component resource budgets and structured metrics to ground systems

  • Cross-team integration with other engineering teams and organizations

This is a sitebased role, employees work 3+ days (60%+) per week from a Viasat office or work location within a standard fiveday workweek.

The day-to-day

You will provide leadership for the development of software for edge platforms used in Aviation, delivering connectivity to end user devices leveraging Viasat’s networks.  The team you lead will support support the critical infrastructure used for creating, testing, and delivering this connectivity via dedicated mobility access servers (MAS).  We are looking for leader of a product team that can design, write, and deliver software services to our commercial aircraft. You will influence new designs, architectures, and methods for large-scale distributed systems. As part of our DevOps model, you will develop the service and own it from cradle to grave.

What you'll need
  • 7+ years of hands-on software engineering (Go, Python, or Java) with systems programming in Linux

  • 2+ years leading a cross-functional software team in an agile/DevOps, including distributed time zones

  • Strong networking fundamentals: DHCP, DNS, NAT, iptables, TCP/IP, Layer ¾, etc

  • Experience with distributed systems where state synchronization failures have real production SLA consequences

  • Hands-on Linux, systemd, and containerized workloads (Docker, Kubernetes)

  • Bachelor's degree or higher in Computer Science, Computer Engineering, or a related field

What will help you on the job
  • Protocol-level networking: AMQP/RabbitMQ, HTTP/3 / QUIC, RADIUS, DHCP option encoding

  • Experience building automated integration test frameworks for distributed systems (not just unit tests)

  • Experience modernizing a legacy stateful system incrementally in production (feature-flagged migration, dual-run)

  • Familiarity with aviation or embedded edge platform constraints — resource-limited hardware, over-the-air software delivery, regulatory environments

  • CI/CD experience with Github Actions or Jenkins

  • Modern AI-enhanced development workflow

Salary range
$168,000.00 - $265,000.00 / annually. For specific work locations within San Jose, the San Francisco Bay area and New York City metropolitan area, the base pay range for this role is $209,000.00- $313,000.00/ annually
At Viasat, we consider many factors when it comes to compensation, including the scope of the position as well as your background and experience. Base pay may vary depending on job-related knowledge, skills, and experience. Additional cash or stock incentives may be provided as part of the compensation package, in addition to a range of medical, financial, and/or other benefits, dependent on the position offered.
