What is software development?

Software development is the process of designing, creating, testing, and maintaining computer programs or applications. It involves a range of tasks including writing code, debugging, and collaborating with other team members to solve problems and deliver functional software solutions. Software development can encompass everything from mobile apps and websites to large-scale enterprise systems. Developers use various programming languages and tools depending on the project requirements.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a software developer, and why are they important?

To thrive as a Software Developer, you need strong programming skills (such as Python, Java, or C++), problem-solving abilities, and typically a degree in computer science or a related field. Familiarity with version control systems like Git, integrated development environments (IDEs), and sometimes certifications in cloud platforms or specific frameworks are often required. Collaboration, adaptability, and effective communication are essential soft skills for working in diverse development teams and navigating project requirements. These skills and qualities ensure efficient code development, seamless teamwork, and successful delivery of robust software solutions.

What are some common challenges software developers face when working on collaborative projects, and how can these be addressed?

Software developers often encounter challenges such as coordinating code changes, managing merge conflicts, and ensuring consistent communication across the team during collaborative projects. Job description

The Position

Every plant in our fleet streams data around the clock from power output, irradiance, battery state of charge, breaker states, market dispatch signals. A small in-house engineering team turned that firehose into software the company runs on: a real-time fleet monitoring platform and a trading platform for the energy markets our batteries bid into. We built both ourselves, from the database schema to the UI.

Now we are starting the next chapter: rebuilding the plant-to-cloud data pipeline on modern streaming infrastructure and standing up a centralized data and API platform that every team at Arevon such as operations, trading, finance, and data science will build on. You would be one of the first engineers on that build.

This is not a ticket-queue job. You will build alongside the engineers who designed these systems, ship code that moves real megawatts, and see your work in use at the next desk.

No energy industry experience required. If you learn fast, we will teach you how a battery bids into a power market.

Key Responsibilities

  • Help design and build the next-generation data pipeline: MQTT/Sparkplug at the plant edge, external API integrations, Kafka streaming, and a centralized API layer on top.
  • Turn raw telemetry from inverters, meters, and batteries into data people can trust: quality control, gap-filling, event detection.
  • Ship features end-to-end on our internal platforms: database schema to API to React UI, used daily by operators and traders.
  • Work with real physics and market data: solar production models, battery dispatch, CAISO prices.
  • Partner with data science to put price and production forecasts into production.
  • Own what you ship: instrument it, test it, run it, fix it.

Required Qualifications

  • Early in your career, whether you're a recent graduate or have one to three years of experience, you're looking for an opportunity to take on greater ownership and responsibility. We value the impact you've made and the work you've built more than the number of years on your resume.
  • You've created something meaningful, whether through a side project, research initiative, startup venture, or an academic project that extended well beyond the assignment. You enjoy discussing the decisions, tradeoffs, and problem-solving that brought it to life.
  • You're naturally curious about how systems work in the real world. When something behaves unexpectedly, you want to understand the underlying cause, not just the outcome.
  • You prioritize quality and thoughtful execution over speed alone. You're willing to advocate for doing things the right way, even when it requires additional effort.
  • You thrive in a highly collaborative, fast-moving environment where autonomy is expected. You're comfortable identifying opportunities, investigating challenges, and driving solutions without waiting for direction.
  • You value being part of the conversation and contributing in real time. This role is based in Scottsdale and requires three days per week on-site. We believe that in-person collaboration is a meaningful part of how we learn, innovate, and achieve results together.

Our Stack

  • Languages: Python, TypeScript/JavaScript
  • Frontend: React (Vite and Next.js)
  • Backend and data: FastAPI, Django REST Framework, PostgreSQL/TimescaleDB, MongoDB, Snowflake
  • Infrastructure: AWS (IoT Core, Lambda, S3), Docker, Terraform, GitHub with CI/CD
  • Where we are headed: MQTT/Sparkplug ingestion, Kafka streaming, one centralized data and API platform for the whole company based on ClickHouse.
  • Agile Scrum: short sprints, standups, and retros - you will always know what you are building, why, and who it is for.
  • AI-native: we have fully embraced AI code generation with Anthropic tooling - Claude Code is part of our standard kit, and you will learn to wield it well. The tools handle the boilerplate; you bring the judgment, taste, and system design they lack.

Why Join Arevon?

We believe you should love what you do and love where you work, which is why we offer a wide range of benefits to support your personal and professional well-being.

  • Competitive Compensation and Incentives
  • Generous Paid Time Off
  • 401(k) Plan with 6% Company Match
  • Tuition Reimbursement Program
  • Paid Parental and Caregiver Leave
  • Inspiring Company Culture
  • Professional Development Opportunities
