What is software development?

Software development is the process of designing, creating, testing, and maintaining computer programs or applications. It involves a range of tasks including writing code, debugging, and collaborating with other team members to solve problems and deliver functional software solutions. Software development can encompass everything from mobile apps and websites to large-scale enterprise systems. Developers use various programming languages and tools depending on the project requirements.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a software developer, and why are they important?

To thrive as a Software Developer, you need strong programming skills (such as Python, Java, or C++), problem-solving abilities, and typically a degree in computer science or a related field. Familiarity with version control systems like Git, integrated development environments (IDEs), and sometimes certifications in cloud platforms or specific frameworks are often required. Collaboration, adaptability, and effective communication are essential soft skills for working in diverse development teams and navigating project requirements. These skills and qualities ensure efficient code development, seamless teamwork, and successful delivery of robust software solutions.

What are some common challenges software developers face when working on collaborative projects, and how can these be addressed?

Software developers often encounter challenges such as coordinating code changes, managing merge conflicts, and ensuring consistent communication across the team during collaborative projects. To address these issues, teams typically use version control systems like Git, establish clear coding standards, and hold regular stand-up meetings to keep everyone aligned. Additionally, utilizing code review processes and project management tools helps maintain quality and transparency, making collaboration smoother and more efficient.

Job description

This position is 100% remote anywhere in the US

Overview:

We are seeking an Engineering Manager to lead a high-caliber, internationally dispersed team of senior engineers delivering shared platform services and core AI capabilities for a SaaS business. This people-first player-coach role combines hands-on technical leadership with career development, performance management, product partnership, and ownership of FedRAMP responsibilities in close coordination with Platform Engineering and Security.

What you will do:

  • Lead, coach, and grow a team of internationally dispersed senior/principal-level engineers, including 1:1s, performance reviews, and individual development plans, while contributing directly to architecture and key code paths.
  • Build and scale common SaaS platform services (shared APIs, identity, orchestration, reliability, and developer enablement capabilities).
  • Define and deliver core AI capabilities in production SaaS environments (AI service abstractions, model integration patterns, evaluation and observability).
  • Champion the company's commitment to running on AI: set AI tooling standards across the team, evaluate engineering quality in an AI-first workflow, and lead the cultural change required to help engineers adopt and evolve that model. This includes hands-on experience with AI specification frameworks, AI CLI/harnesses, and the broader CoPilot ecosystem.
  • Collaborate with Product Managers to shape product vision, define roadmaps, prioritize investments, and align technical strategy with business outcomes.
  • Drive cross-team alignment, technical standards, and delivery excellence across platform and product engineering.
  • Co-ordinate the management of Foundation FedRAMP services and lead that area of the product within the group, working closely with Platform Engineering, Security, and compliance stakeholders to maintain and evolve our FedRAMP posture.

What we are looking for:

  • Bachelor's degree in Computer Science, Engineering, or a related technical field, or equivalent practical experience.
  • 7+ years of software development experience, including at least 5+ years as a Senior Software Engineer/Developer and 2+ years in a technical leadership capacity leading, mentoring, or coaching engineers.
  • Demonstrated success in a player-coach leadership role within SaaS or platform engineering environments.
  • Experience managing internationally dispersed teams through 1:1s, performance reviews, structured career development, and delivery leadership.
  • Strong background in SaaS foundation/platform engineering, reusable common services, cloud-native architecture, distributed systems, and platform reliability.
  • Experience with AI-driven software development practices and leveraging AI tools to improve engineering productivity and delivery.
  • Experience with modern programming languages such as Python, TypeScript, or Golang.
  • Experience with FedRAMP-compliant environments, including coordination across engineering, security, and compliance stakeholders to manage and maintain service boundaries.
  • Must be a U.S. Citizen or U.S. Permanent Resident due to FedRAMP/Government Cloud access requirements.
  • Travel is required as needed for team, planning, customer, or stakeholder engagements.
  • Strong partnership with Product Management in roadmap definition, product vision development, prioritization, and business outcome alignment.
  • Excellent system design, technical communication, execution leadership, and cross-team alignment skills.

AI Skills/Knowledge:

  • Proven experience building and operating core AI capabilities within a SaaS business, including AI service abstractions, model integration patterns, evaluation, and observability.
  • Hands-on experience with AI-driven software development methodology, including AI specification frameworks, AI CLI/harnesses, and the Copilot ecosystem.
  • Ability to set AI tooling standards for an engineering team and evaluate engineering quality in an AI-first development workflow.
  • Demonstrated ability to lead cultural change required for engineers to adopt, improve, and responsibly evolve AI-enabled development practices.

Preferred Skills (a plus but not required):

  • Experience leading senior engineering teams in fast-paced SaaS organizations.
  • Expertise in cloud-native architecture, distributed systems, and platform reliability.
  • Experience establishing engineering operating models for AI-enabled product development.
  • Experience coordinating across Platform Engineering, Security, compliance, and product engineering teams to support regulated SaaS delivery.
