What Does a Software Development Manager Do?

As a software development manager, your primary responsibilities are to oversee software development teams and to act as a liaison between your teams and senior management. You hire and train new staff, manage and evaluate existing developers, provide guidance on the design and implementation of new software applications, and ensure that projects stay on schedule and within budget. You collaborate with upper-level management and your developers to make sure that new and existing software applications meet business objectives.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a Software Development Manager, and why are they important?

To thrive as a Software Development Manager, you need a solid background in software engineering, leadership experience, and usually a degree in computer science or a related field. Familiarity with project management tools (like Jira or Trello), version control systems (such as Git), and sometimes certifications like PMP or Scrum Master are highly beneficial. Exceptional communication, problem-solving abilities, and the capacity to motivate and mentor teams are critical soft skills. These competencies ensure successful project delivery, foster team development, and align technical efforts with business goals.

How does a Software Development Manager typically balance technical leadership with people management responsibilities?

As a Software Development Manager, you’ll find that balancing hands-on technical leadership with people management is a central part of the role. You’ll spend part of your time guiding architectural decisions and overseeing code quality, while also focusing on coaching, mentoring, and supporting your team’s professional growth. Effective delegation, setting clear priorities, and maintaining open communication with both developers and stakeholders are key to managing these dual responsibilities. Many managers also work closely with product managers, QA, and other departments to ensure alignment across projects.

We are partnering with a client seeking a hands-on leader to oversee and elevate their software development organization. This role is ideal for someone who thrives in a people-first leadership position while still maintaining enough technical depth to guide architecture, solve complex challenges, and support modernization efforts.

Position Overview

This individual will lead and grow a team of developers (approximately 20–25), focusing first on team development, coaching, and accountability, while also providing technical direction across a hybrid environment that includes both legacy systems and modern cloud-based applications.

The right person will help shape the future of application development by guiding the transition from legacy platforms (Oracle EBS) to modern solutions (Fusion), while supporting a tech stack that includes Java, Go, React, and Azure DevOps.

Key Responsibilities

  • Lead, mentor, and develop a team of developers, fostering a culture of accountability and continuous improvement
  • Strengthen existing team leads and elevate overall team performance
  • Provide architectural guidance across both legacy and modern application environments
  • Support and guide cloud-native and containerized development practices
  • Oversee the full software development lifecycle, from planning through delivery
  • Step in to troubleshoot and resolve complex technical challenges when needed
  • Drive best practices in DevOps, CI/CD, and release management
  • Partner with business and technical stakeholders to align development efforts with organizational goals
  • Manage resource planning, hiring, and performance management for the development team

Required Experience & Skills

  • 6+ years of technical leadership and people management experience
  • Proven ability to lead and scale development teams in an enterprise environment
  • Strong background in modern development frameworks and tools, including: Java, React, Azure DevOps
  • Experience working across legacy systems and modern cloud platforms
  • Solid understanding of DevOps practices, CI/CD pipelines, and automation
  • Experience with containerized environments (Kubernetes/AKS)
  • Familiarity with Agile methodologies and tools (Jira, Confluence, Git, etc.)
  • Strong communication, leadership, and mentoring skills

Preferred Experience

  • Exposure to Python for scripting or automation
  • Experience supporting ERP transformations (Oracle EBS to Fusion or similar)
  • Familiarity with ITIL or structured service management practices

This is a great opportunity to step into a leadership role where you can make a meaningful impact on both team development and technology direction within a growing organization.
