Job description

TRAVEL & WORK LOCATION

  • This position requires approximately 25% of travel to the surrounding areas Alabama, Mississippi, and Georgia.

JOB SUMMARY

The Substation Control Standards Engineer/Sr. Designer role involves designing advanced microprocessor-based protective relay systems and control schemes using AutoCAD Electrical and Vault Professional software for SOCO Standards initiatives. This position entails specifying materials for substation design standards, which could include stock and shop-fabricated items. Additionally, the role requires transmitting SOCO Standard drawing packages and supporting specifications through the Transmission Engineering job transmittal program.

JOB RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Prioritize SAFETY using a "Safety First" mentality and lead by example.
  • Adhere to Quality Assurance guidelines for high-quality design standards needed to design (new or modify existing) substations using CAD-based tools.
  • Provide guidance on Southern Company Design Standards, procedures, and processes.
  • Design advanced microprocessor-based protective relay systems and control schemes using AutoCAD Electrical and Vault Professional software for SOCO Standards initiatives.  
  • Assist Control Standards Ad-hoc committees on the design of new standards and updates to existing standards.
  • Keep up with control SOCO standards Maintenance requests using JIRA ticketing software.
  • Complete maintenance updates on control SOCO standards drawings when needed.
  • Transmit Control Standard drawing packages and supporting specifications using the Transmission Engineering job transmittal program.
  • Coordinate and communicate with other departments associated with Substation Control Design Standards.
  • Interact with manufacturers, vendors, and Southern Company committee members to resolve equipment and material issues.
  • Provide support to Substation Design, Substation Construction, Field Services, Project Management, and Substation Maintenance when required.
  • Attend P and C Standards Working Group Meetings when required.
  • Design support for new or updated SOCO Standards Ad-hoc groups when required.
  • Support Southern Company's design criteria and standardization effort.
  • Handle multiple tasks simultaneously, set priorities, and use effective time management and organizational skills to achieve project team goals.
  • Support Southern Company storm restoration efforts.

JOB QUALIFICATIONS

Education:

  • Bachelor's degree in electrical engineering or electrical engineering technology with a minimum of 5 years' relevant design experience.
  • Associate degree with a minimum of 8 years' relevant design experience
  • No Degree with a minimum of 10 years of relevant design or utility experience

Experience:

  • Proficiency using Microsoft Office products is required.
  • Experience using Autodesk Suite (including AutoCAD Electrical) or higher is required.
  • Substation protective relay testing experience along with control scheme testing and commissioning experience is a strong plus.
  • Understanding of substation protection & control scheme operation is preferred.
  • The ability to create Substation Control Design drawings from a single line wiring diagram is preferred.
  • Experience in Transmission &/or Distribution Substation Operations for an electric power utility company is preferred.
  • Experience in the field of Substation Engineering, Field Services, Switchboard Wiring, Power Delivery, Substation Maintenance, or Substation Construction is preferred.
  • Experience working with document management & estimating systems such as Transmission Estimating and Management System (TEAMS), STOMP, MAXIMO, SCST Vault is preferred.

Knowledge, Skills & Abilities:

  • Excellent communication skills (oral & written) and the ability to communicate technical issues simply.
  • Selfstarter with the ability to work independently and take initiative with minimal supervision is required.
  • Knowledge of basic electrical power system theory is required.
  • A good understanding of utility electric grid operations is preferred.
  • Strong problem-solving skills.
  • Ability to work well in a team environment and develop relationships at all levels.
  • Effective time management and organizational skills to manage multiple projects with various priorities and competing deadlines.
