Job Description:
Under the general direction of the Director of International Student Services (ISS), the International Student Advisor will provide high-quality immigration guidance to international students and promote their full participation and integration into the university community. This position is called upon to interpret internal university policies interfacing with federal immigration regulations affecting international students at LSU, and will share the student workload with the student advising team. The advisor will support timely processing, student support and services, and compliance efforts on behalf of the university.
Salary Range: $42,960-$51,553
Salary will be commensurate with experience and qualifications within the posted range.
Job Responsibilities
60%:
  • Serve as Designated School Official (DSO) and an ARO for the Department of Homeland Security and the Department of State's reporting requirements impacting international students.
  • Manages data for international students and their dependents, ensuring accuracy, consistency, and seamless data flow between systems.
  • Conducts ongoing tracking and reporting tasks required by SEVIS.
  • Assists with implementation and maintenance of Sunapsis updates, including creation of new processes and e-forms.
  • Collaborates with administrative offices, such as admissions, Information Technology Services, to ensure SEVIS compliance and data integrity.
  • Stays informed about laws, regulations, and policies related to SEVP compliance, and recommends policies and procedures associated with reporting requirements.
  • Trains students, faculty, and staff on Sunapsis.

35%:
  • Counsel international students, university staff, and faculty on a broad range of immigration and intercultural issues.
  • Advise international students and scholars on personal, academic, career, social, and cultural matters.
  • Share the document processing workload with advisors in ISS. This includes SEVIS check-in and processing requests.
  • Remain current on relevant immigration regulations and policies impacting the international student populations at LSU.
  • Assist with the preparation and delivery of workshops, presentations, and other programming related to immigration services for international students and scholars.

5%:
  • Assist with other duties as assigned by the Director of International Student Services.

Additional Requirements
  • FERPA - As with all LSU employees, due to this position title and/or responsibilities, this position has an obligation to assist students in the acquisition of necessary services. Should a student appear in need of or seek assistance with issues of an emotional, behavioral, or mental health-related matter, they should be referred to the proper service within the Student Health Center. In situations where the student creates an impression that they are a danger to themselves or others, the advisor should immediately contact the Care Team, the Dean of Students, or the appropriate law enforcement agency. The employee outside of those rights contained within FERPA should create no impression of client or patient confidentiality.

Minimum Qualifications
Bachelor's degree
1-2 years working with international students in a university setting.
LSU values skills, experience, and expertise. Candidates who have relevant experience in key job responsibilities are encouraged to apply- a degree is not required as long as the candidate meets the required years of experience specified in the job description.
Specific Experience:
  • General understanding of other U.S. immigration laws and classifications
  • Technical ability to interface with student information systems such as Workday, Sunapsis

To qualify for federal agency approval to issue I-20s and DS-2019s, the successful candidate must have U.S. citizenship or permanent residence.
Preferred Qualifications
Master's degree
1-3 years of experience advising F-1 and J-1 international students
Specific Experience:
Strong knowledge of government regulations pertaining to relevant status categories (e.g., F-1, J-1,), and familiarity with other immigration classifications.
