Job description

Position Summary:

From concept to production, the Industrial Designer will work on products that convey an exceptional aesthetic, performance and attention to detail. The role is responsible for creating new office products that are useful and versatile. The Industrial Designer will support the design team’s effort to create products to better meet the needs of our customers.

Essential Duties & Responsibilities:

· Participate in various design projects from concept to completion

· Create design solutions from ideation through to production on moderately complex projects

· Work with Senior Industrial Designers or Manager to determine requirements for designs

· Sketch new product ideas or concepts

· 3D digital modeling for concept development and production

· Create specification sheets for products to be used by the factory for production

· Assist Senior Industrial Designers and Manager with renderings. Start to put together render scenes, creating from scratch and compose the scene.

· Develop visual presentation of product concepts including in-use shots and life style shots

· Use computer software to develop virtual models of different designs

· Create quality physical prototypes of product designs either by foam core mockups or 3-D printing that can be sent to clients as a representative sample of the product

· Collaborate and communicate cross functionally with design, product management and marketing teams on industrial design and development

· Develop both verbal and visual presentations to present ideas to others within the organization – across the department as well as decision makers

Education/Experience:

· BA or BS in Industrial Design

· At least 3 years of Product Design experience with a strong electronic portfolio of work that reflects this

· High proficiency in 2D and 3D software skills (Rhino, V-Ray, Keyshot, 3-D printing)

· Excellent sketching skills – able to hand sketch multiple ideas

· Strong knowledge of and experience with design techniques (ex. prototyping)

· Demonstrable knowledge of manufacturing processes

· Technical aptitude – ability to pick up new technology quickly

· Strong written and verbal communication/documentation skills; able to present ideas and concepts

· Able to think creatively with an eye for color and design

· Ability to work collaboratively and in a fast paced environment

· Attention to detail

· Ability to apply analytical and problem solving skills

· Comfortable prototyping using a variety of methods

Competencies:

Analytical skills. Industrial designers use logic or reasoning skills to study consumers and recognize the need for new products.

Artistic ability. Industrial designers sketch their initial design ideas, which are used later to create prototypes. As such, designers must be able to express their design through illustration.

Computer skills. Industrial designers use computer-aided design software to develop their designs and create prototypes.

Creativity. Industrial designers must be innovative in their designs and the ways in which they integrate existing technologies into their new product.

Interpersonal skills. Industrial designers must develop cooperative working relationships with colleagues and cross functionally who specialize in related disciplines.

Mechanical skills. Industrial designers must understand how products are engineered, at least for the types of products that they design.

Problem-solving skills. Industrial designers identify complex design problems such as the need, size, and cost of a product, anticipate production issues, develop alternatives, evaluate options, and implement solutions.
