Outpatient Coder (Remote)

Location: Remote (based in CST Time Zone)
Pay Rate: $45.37/hour (W-2)
Schedule: Sundayโ€“Saturday, between 5:00 AM โ€“ 11:00 PM CST (Must be flexible to work any 5x8-hour shift including at least one weekend day)
Training: 1 week, Mondayโ€“Friday, 7:30 AM โ€“ 4:30 PM CST


Position Overview

Seeking two experienced Outpatient Coders to support the OP Surgery Service Line. The ideal candidate will have strong acute hospital-based coding experience, with expertise in Epic EMR, 3M 360 Encoder, and valid AHIMA or AAPC certification.

This is a remote contract position ideal for coders who thrive in a fast-paced healthcare environment and are comfortable with varied shift timings.


Key Responsibilities
  • Review and code outpatient hospital accounts using ICD-10-CM, CPT, HCPCS, and Modifiers.

  • Ensure coding accuracy per official coding guidelines and UTSW/HIM standards.

  • Identify and resolve LCD, NCD, and CCI edits to support medical necessity.

  • Validate charge-master driven CPT code assignments.

  • Abstract key data elements (e.g., physician, procedure date, disposition).

  • Recognize and escalate missing or incomplete documentation.

  • Maintain high levels of quality and productivity standards.

  • Mentor or train peers on coding best practices as needed.


Required Qualifications
  • 3โ€“5 years of acute hospital-based outpatient coding experience (facility coding).

  • Proficiency in Epic EMR and 3M 360 Encoder.

  • One or more of the following certifications:

    • AHIMA: RHIA, RHIT, or CCS

    • AAPC: CPC, COC, or CPC-H

  • Advanced computer literacy and ability to work independently in a remote setting.


Preferred Qualifications
  • Degree in Health Information Management or a related field.

  • Prior experience coding in Outpatient Surgery, Day Surgery, Radiology, and Emergency Department settings.


Work Hours & Environment
  • 40 hours/week, flexible within coverage hours (5 AMโ€“11 PM CST).

  • Must be willing to work at least one weekend day.

  • 1-week onboarding/training (Mโ€“F, 7:30 AMโ€“4:30 PM CST).
