Job description

Radiology Coding Specialist

Education: Graduate of Health Information Management, Medical Coding, or related healthcare program. Associate degree or higher preferred. Certified by the American Academy of Professional Coders (AAPC) or American Health Information Management Association (AHIMA) as CPC, CCS, RHIT, or RHIA. Specialty certification in Radiology Coding preferred.

Training and Experience: Minimum of one (1) year experience in radiology, diagnostic imaging, outpatient, or physician-based coding preferred. Must be capable of following verbal and written instructions and should practice diplomacy in dealing with physicians and clinical staff. Will participate in ongoing education through workshops, in-service programs, and updates from CMS, CPT, ICD-10-CM, HCPCS, Medicare Administrative Contractors, and other payors.

Job Knowledge: Must be familiar with medical terminology, anatomy, physiology, disease processes, and radiological procedures. Demonstrates knowledge of CPT, ICD-10-CM, HCPCS, National Correct Coding Initiative (NCCI) edits, Medicare regulations, and payer-specific requirements. Must be able to accurately assign diagnostic and procedural codes for diagnostic and interventional radiology services. Abides by the Standards of Ethical Coding as set forth by AHIMA and AAPC. Must be able to communicate verbally and in writing with physicians, clinical staff, administration, and external review organizations as required.

Description:

Should have the ability to work under pressure and meet productivity and quality standards consistently. Associate needs considerable initiative and judgment in collecting, analyzing, and coding radiology documentation. Works under the supervision of the Director of Coding performing duties in an area where procedures are standardized but where frequent independent decisions are required.

Responsible for reviewing radiology reports, physician documentation, imaging records, and related medical information to assign accurate diagnosis and procedure codes. Ensures compliance with federal and state regulations, payer guidelines, and organizational policies. Assists in maintaining a quality improvement system designed to assure coding accuracy, billing integrity, and regulatory compliance. Promotes proper utilization of coding resources to support efficient, cost-effective, and high-quality patient care.

Physical Effort: Works in a well-lighted, air-conditioned office environment with occasional interaction with radiology and patient care departments to obtain additional information.
