Job Title: Senior Financial Controller
Department: Finance
Reports To: Chief of Staff

Position Summary
The Senior Financial Controller is a key member of the organization’s leadership team, responsible for overseeing all accounting, financial reporting, compliance, and internal control functions. This role ensures financial integrity, supports mission-aligned decision-making, and strengthens the organization’s long-term sustainability.

The ideal candidate is both detail-oriented and strategically minded—someone who can manage day-to-day financial operations while preparing to assume full CFO responsibilities within 24–36 months.

This position plays a pivotal role in ensuring that financial stewardship supports the mission of caring for children and families in need. As the future CFO, the Senior Financial Controller will help shape the organization’s long-term sustainability and expand its impact for years to come.

Qualifications
Required
• Bachelor’s degree in Accounting, Finance, or related field. CPA or CMA strongly preferred.
• 7+ years of progressive accounting/finance experience, including nonprofit experience.
• Strong knowledge of GAAP and nonprofit fund accounting.
• Demonstrated experience managing audits and complex budgets.
• Proven leadership skills with the ability to mentor and develop staff.
• Alignment with the organization’s Christian mission and values.

Preferred
• Experience in foster care, adoption, residential care, or human services organizations.
• Familiarity with government contracts, Medicaid billing, or child welfare funding streams.
• Experience with financial systems implementation or optimization.
• Strategic planning or executive leadership experience.

Essential Responsibilities
Financial Leadership amp; Strategy

• Partner with the CEO and COS and executive leadership to develop financial strategies that support organizational sustainability, growth and mission impact.
• Lead long-term financial planning, forecasting, and scenario modeling.
• Provide financial insights to program leaders in foster care, adoption, and residential services.
• Streamline current chart of accounts, GL codes and departments and determine how to simplify and provide meaningful financial reports leadership can use to make proper decisions. Implement reporting by defined geographic regions.
• Support leadership with timely, accurate financial reports and analysis.

Accounting amp; Reporting
• Oversee all accounting operations, including general ledger, accounts payable/receivable, payroll, and month-end close.
• Ensure timely preparation of GAAP-compliant financial statements.
• Maintain accurate fund accounting and grant tracking for federal, state, and private funding sources.
• Manage annual audits and coordinate with external auditors.

Compliance amp; Internal Controls
• Ensure compliance with federal and state regulations related to child welfare funding, nonprofit reporting, and restricted gifts.
• Strengthen internal controls and financial policies across the organization.
• Oversee tax filings, including Form 990 and state charitable registrations.

Budgeting amp; Program Support
• Lead the annual budgeting process in collaboration with program directors/functional organizational leadership.
• Provide financial training and support to non-financial managers.
• Provide regular financial performance reports to leadership.
• Monitor program-level financial performance and recommend corrective actions.

Systems amp; Process Improvement
• Evaluate and optimize financial systems, workflows, and reporting tools.
• Implement technology solutions that improve accuracy, efficiency, and transparency.
• Champion data-driven decision-making across the organization.
• Utilize AI to improve efficiencies as appropriate

Leadership amp; Team Development
• Supervise and mentor accounting staff, fostering a culture of excellence, accountability, and Christian service.
• Model servant leadership and support a healthy, mission-aligned organizational culture.
• Prepare to assume CFO responsibilities through intentional leadership development.
