Job Title: Financial Controller


About the Company

Bjerk Builders is a growing mid-sized construction firm specializing in GC, electric, and drywall. We are committed to operational excellence, financial discipline, and delivering high-quality projects. We are seeking an experienced Financial Controller to lead our accounting operations and support strategic decision-making.

Position Summary

The Financial Controller will oversee all financial and accounting activities, ensuring accurate reporting, strong internal controls, and compliance with industry standards. This role requires deep experience in construction accounting and hands-on expertise with Sage 300 (formerly Timberline).

Key Responsibilities

Financial Management & Reporting

  • Prepare and manage monthly, quarterly, and annual financial statements
  • Lead budgeting, forecasting, and variance analysis processes
  • Provide actionable financial insights to executive leadership
  • Monitor cash flow, job costing, and profitability across projects

Construction Accounting

  • Oversee job cost accounting, WIP (Work in Progress), and percentage-of-completion reporting
  • Manage project-based financial tracking, including cost allocations and revenue recognition
  • Ensure accurate tracking of subcontractor costs, change orders, and retainage

Sage 300 Administration

  • Serve as the internal expert for Sage 300 Construction & Real Estate (CRE)
  • Maintain system integrity, chart of accounts, and job cost structures
  • Optimize workflows and reporting within Sage 300
  • Train and support accounting staff on system best practices

Compliance & Controls

  • Ensure compliance with GAAP and construction-specific accounting standards
  • Maintain strong internal controls and audit readiness
  • Coordinate with external auditors, tax advisors, and regulatory bodies

Leadership & Team Management

  • Lead and mentor the accounting team (AP, AR, payroll, project accounting)
  • Establish and improve financial processes and reporting systems
  • Collaborate cross-functionally with operations and project management teams


Qualifications

Required

  • Bachelor's degree in Accounting, Finance, or related field
  • 7+ years of progressive accounting experience, with 3+ years in construction
  • Advanced proficiency in Sage 300 CRE (mandatory)
  • Strong knowledge of job costing, WIP reporting, and construction financials
  • Experience managing financial audits and compliance

Preferred

  • CPA or CMA designation
  • Experience with multi-entity or multi-project environments
  • Familiarity with construction contracts and risk management
