ABC News is seeking an experienced Senior Digital Editor to provide editorial leadership and oversight of breaking news coverage across ABCNews.com. This role leads a team of editors and reporters through a 24/7 news cycle, sets editorial standards and coverage strategy, and serves as a senior editorial decision-maker on fast-moving stories.

The Senior Digital Editor sits at the center of ABC News Digital's breaking news operation, with editorial oversight spanning shifts across a 24/7 cycle. This person leads and mentors a team of editors and reporters, helps set the daily and overnight coverage agenda, and is the editorial authority on text stories published to ABCNews.com during their shift. The role requires close partnership with the newsgathering operation, senior editorial leadership, legal and standards, broadcast units, and the Audience Development team, as well as coordination with bureaus, including London, to ensure seamless 24-hour handoffs.

This is a senior, high-visibility leadership role for someone who has run point on major breaking news at a national digital news organization, can manage and develop a team under pressure, and is comfortable making high-stakes editorial calls in real time.

The role is based in our New York City office and may require some flexibility to provide leadership coverage to ensure continuous editorial oversight of breaking news.

Responsibilities and Duties of the Role:

  • Provide editorial leadership and sign-off for written breaking news coverage across a 24/7 news cycle
  • Assign, edit, and, when necessary, write breaking news stories under deadline
  • Lead, mentor, and manage a team of editors and reporters, including scheduling, shift coverage, and performance development
  • Leverage real-time analytics and insights to inform coverage, story development and strategy
  • Collaborate with digital leadership team on key decision-making

Required Education, Experience/Skills/Training:

Basic Qualifications:

  • Minimum 7 years' experience editing for a digital news outlet, including experience managing or leading editors
  • Proven track record leading breaking news coverage at a major digital news organization
  • Demonstrated people-leadership experience: hiring, scheduling, coaching, and performance management
  • Ability to write and edit on deadline with speed and accuracy under high pressure
  • Sound editorial judgment and ability to make high-stakes calls independently
  • Willingness to work a flexible schedule, including evenings, overnights, and weekends, to ensure 24/7 editorial coverage
  • Excellent cross-team collaboration and communication skills

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Experience running point on major breaking news events at a national or international level
  • Experience managing distributed or cross-time-zone teams
  • Track record of developing editorial talent and building high-performing teams
  • Deep familiarity with legal, standards, and editorial risk considerations in fast-moving news
  • Experience partnering with broadcast and audience/social teams on integrated coverage

Required Education:

  • BA or BS from a 4-year accredited college or university, or equivalent experience

Preferred Education:

  • Master's degree in journalism from an accredited college or university, or equivalent experience
The hiring range for this position in New York is $132,800 - $178,000 per year. The base pay actually offered will take into account internal equity and also may vary depending on the candidate's geographic region, job-related knowledge, skills, and experience among other factors. A bonus and/or long-term incentive units may be provided as part of the compensation package, in addition to the full range of medical, financial, and/or other benefits, dependent on the level and position offered.
