What is a senior construction accountant?

Senior Construction Accountants are experienced professionals who manage and oversee the financial operations of construction projects and companies. They are responsible for budgeting, cost tracking, financial reporting, and ensuring compliance with accounting standards specific to the construction industry. Their role often includes working closely with project managers, analyzing financial data, and implementing controls to keep projects on budget and in compliance. In addition to technical accounting tasks, they may also supervise junior accountants and contribute to strategic planning for the company.

What are some common challenges a senior construction accountant faces in managing project budgets and cost tracking?

Senior Construction Accountants often encounter challenges such as managing multiple, simultaneous projects with varying scopes, ensuring accurate cost allocation, and dealing with frequent changes in project timelines or budgets. They must collaborate closely with project managers, estimators, and subcontractors to monitor expenditures, identify discrepancies, and forecast potential overruns. Keeping up with detailed documentation and navigating complex contract terms are also integral parts of the role, requiring strong organizational skills and proactive communication.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a senior construction accountant, and why are they important?

To thrive as a Senior Construction Accountant, you need in-depth knowledge of accounting principles, cost accounting, and experience with construction project financials, usually supported by a degree in accounting or finance and several years of industry experience. Proficiency with construction accounting software (such as Sage 300 or Viewpoint), ERP systems, and advanced Excel skills is typically required. Strong analytical thinking, attention to detail, and effective communication help ensure accuracy and collaboration with project managers and stakeholders. These skills are crucial for managing complex budgets, maintaining regulatory compliance, and supporting the financial health of construction projects.

Location: Phoenix, AZ 85040 | In-Office

We're seeking someone who has built their accounting career supporting a commercial general contractor or specialty subcontractor and has hands-on experience with contract accounting, job costing, project cost accounting, Work-in-Progress (WIP) reporting, progress billings, retainage, subcontractor accounting, payroll, and financial reporting.

The ideal candidate will be able to step into an established commercial construction business with minimal training, confidently managing the day-to-day accounting functions that support active construction projects.

This role is responsible for overseeing the day-to-day accounting that supports commercial construction projects from contract award through project closeout.

Must be comfortable working in a hands-on environment where accuracy, responsiveness, and follow-through are critical. This is a casual, friendly office environment.

Key Responsibilities

  • Manage the accounts payable process, including confirming invoice pricing against quotes and purchase orders
  • Enter and process vendor invoices for payment and reconcile vendor statements

  • Prepare, file, and reconcile sales tax returns across multiple jurisdictions
  • Maintain organized financial records and supporting documentation

Financial Reporting & Job Costing

  • Reconcile subsidiary accounts and general ledger accounts
  • Prepare trial balances and support month-end financial reporting activities
  • Prepare and maintain job costing reports and commission statements
  • Monitor project costs, labor allocations, and job profitability reporting
  • Collaborate with subcontractors regarding payments, compliance documentation, and contract requirements
  • Assist leadership with project costing, financial reporting, and operational analysis

Team & Business Support

  • Ensure adherence to accounting standards, company policies, and regulatory requirements
  • Identify opportunities to improve accounting processes and operational efficiencies
  • Work closely with company leadership to support day-to-day financial operations
  • Contribute to special projects and additional accounting initiatives as needed

Required Commercial Construction Experience

  • 5+ years of progressive accounting experience supporting a commercial general contractor or specialty subcontractor.
  • Demonstrated experience managing contract accounting, job costing, project cost accounting, progress billings, retainage, subcontractor accounting, and Work-in-Progress (WIP) reporting.
  • Experience supporting subcontractor compliance, lien waivers, project documentation, and commercial construction contract administration.
  • Experience supporting payroll, accounts payable, accounts receivable, month-end close, and financial reporting within a commercial construction environment.
  • Strong understanding of GAAP and construction accounting principles.
  • Experience partnering directly with project managers, field operations, subcontractors, and company leadership to support project financial performance.
  • Strong organizational skills and attention to detail.
  • Ability to work independently with minimal supervision while taking ownership of day-to-day accounting operations.
  • Ability to speak, read and write in the English language.

Software & Technical Skills

  • Experience with QuickBooks Online strongly preferred
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Excel and Microsoft Office Suite
  • Experience with construction accounting software and ERP systems is preferred
  • Ability to learn and adapt to new technologies and processes

Travel

  • Minimal travel required
  • Occasional visits to affiliated business locations in the Phoenix area may be needed

Compensation & Benefits

  • Competitive salary based on experience
  • Medical, dental, and vision insurance
  • 401(k) with company match
  • Paid time off and paid holidays
  • Stable and growing organization
  • Opportunity for long-term professional growth and advancement
  • Exposure to both operational and strategic financial leadership

Why This Opportunity?

This position offers more than traditional accounting responsibilities. It provides the opportunity to become a trusted financial partner within a growing organization, gain exposure to leadership-level decision-making, and build a path toward broader accounting and finance leadership responsibilities over time.
