Medical Collector – DME (Senior)

About the Role
VQ OrthoCare is seeking an experienced Senior Medical Collector to join our Vista, California office. In this role you will own the back-end collection of durable medical equipment (DME) claims across multiple payer types, resolving aged accounts, working denials and appeals, and driving down outstanding A/R. This is a senior position for a self-directed collector who knows DME billing rules cold and can serve as a go-to resource for the team.
Key Responsibilities
- Manage and collect on outstanding DME claims across Medicare, Department of Defense (DOD)/TRICARE, commercial, and workers’ compensation payers.
- Research, resolve, and appeal denied, underpaid, and rejected claims, ensuring timely follow-up within filing limits.
- Review payer remittances and EOBs to identify root causes of denials and trends, and recommend process improvements.
- Initiate and track appeals, reconsiderations, and reopenings in line with each payer’s requirements and deadlines.
- Communicate professionally with payers, patients, referral sources, and internal teams to resolve account issues.
- Maintain detailed, compliant account notes and meet productivity and aging targets.
- Ensure all activity complies with HIPAA, payer regulations, and company policies.
Required Qualifications
- 3+ years of medical collections experience with a strong focus on DME claims.
- Demonstrated DME collection experience across all four payer types: Medicare, DOD/TRICARE, commercial, and workers’ compensation.
- Working knowledge of DME billing requirements, HCPCS coding, modifiers, CMNs, and proof-of-delivery documentation.
- Experience working denials, appeals, and aged A/R with measurable results.
- Familiarity with payer portals, clearinghouses, and electronic claims/remittance workflows.
- Strong understanding of EOBs, remittance advice, allowables, and contractual adjustments.
- High attention to detail, strong organizational skills, and the ability to work independently and meet targets.
- Working knowledge of HIPAA and healthcare billing compliance.
- High school diploma or equivalent.
Preferred Qualifications
- Experience in an orthopedic, rehabilitation, or DME/HME setting.
- Prior experience as a senior or lead collector, or mentoring other collectors.
- Proficiency with billing systems and Microsoft Excel.
