Senior Bookkeepers are experienced accounting professionals responsible for managing and overseeing an organization's financial records. They handle complex bookkeeping tasks such as reconciling accounts, preparing financial statements, processing payroll, and ensuring compliance with tax regulations. Senior Bookkeepers often supervise junior bookkeeping staff and may collaborate with accountants or auditors to maintain accurate and up-to-date financial information. Their expertise helps businesses make informed financial decisions and stay organized. This role typically requires significant experience in accounting or finance and a strong attention to detail.

What skills and qualifications are needed to be a senior bookkeeper?

To thrive as a Senior Bookkeeper, you need strong accounting knowledge, attention to detail, and experience with financial reporting, often backed by a degree in accounting or finance and several years of bookkeeping experience. Familiarity with accounting software such as QuickBooks, Xero, or Sage, as well as a certification like Certified Bookkeeper (CB), is typically expected. Excellent organizational skills, integrity, and effective communication are crucial soft skills for managing complex financial records and collaborating with stakeholders. These skills ensure accurate financial management, regulatory compliance, and support sound business decision-making.

Job description

Picht & Sons is looking for a Property Accountant / Bookkeeper to handle the financial side of our day-to-day property management operation. We need someone who is comfortable working with numbers but also understands what those numbers represent—rent coming in, vendors getting paid, repairs being charged to the right property, and owners receiving accurate statements.

This is a detail-heavy position. A payment entered against the wrong property or an invoice sitting unnoticed can create problems quickly, so we're looking for someone who keeps clean records and follows through when something doesn't add up.

What You'll Handle

  • Record rent payments, deposits, management fees, and other property-related transactions.
  • Process vendor invoices and make sure expenses are assigned to the correct property or account.
  • Reconcile bank, operating, and property accounts on a regular schedule.
  • Prepare monthly financial statements and reports for property owners.
  • Track accounts payable and receivable and follow up on outstanding balances.
  • Maintain accurate security deposit and tenant account records.
  • Review property income and expenses and investigate unusual or incorrect entries.
  • Work with property managers to confirm repair charges, owner expenses, tenant balances, and other transactions.
  • Organize receipts, invoices, payment records, and supporting financial documents.
  • Assist with year-end reporting and provide records needed by accountants or tax professionals.
  • Keep financial information confidential and records ready for review when needed.

What We're Looking For

  • Previous bookkeeping or accounting experience, preferably involving property management, real estate, or a similar business.
  • Comfortable with account reconciliation, AP/AR, general ledger entries, and financial reporting.
  • Strong attention to detail and good follow-up when numbers don't match.
  • Experience with QuickBooks or property accounting software is helpful.
  • Able to work with spreadsheets and maintain organized electronic records.
  • Someone who can manage recurring deadlines without needing constant reminders.
  • Associate or bachelor's degree in accounting, finance, or business is helpful, but relevant hands-on experience is also valued.

Benefits

  • $75,000 – $110,000 annual salary, depending on experience.
  • Health insurance options.
  • Paid vacation and personal time.
  • Paid company holidays.
  • Retirement plan options.
  • Paid training and professional development.
  • Stable year-round position.
  • Opportunity to grow into senior property accounting, accounting management, or broader real estate operations roles.
