To thrive as a Senior Apprentice, you generally need a solid foundation in the core technical skills of your trade, a relevant educational background, and prior apprenticeship experience. Familiarity with industry-specific tools, equipment, and safety protocols—as well as progression towards or completion of recognized certifications—is crucial. Strong communication, teamwork, and problem-solving abilities help a Senior Apprentice excel in both independent tasks and collaborative projects. These skills and qualifications are important because they ensure safe, efficient work and prepare apprentices for seamless advancement to fully qualified roles.

What are some typical responsibilities and learning opportunities for a Senior Apprentice in their daily role?

As a Senior Apprentice, you can expect to take on more advanced tasks than junior apprentices, often assisting with project planning, troubleshooting, and mentoring newer team members. You’ll have the chance to deepen your practical skills while gaining exposure to specialized equipment or processes relevant to your industry. Daily responsibilities often involve collaborating closely with experienced professionals, attending training sessions, and taking greater ownership of assigned projects. This blend of hands-on work and ongoing learning creates a strong foundation for transitioning into fully qualified roles upon completion of the apprenticeship.

Casa de Salud Medical Clinic is a nonprofit located in the South Valley of Albuquerque and offers fair priced, integrative healthcare to patients who commonly lack access to adequate healthcare services. At Casa de Salud, care is rooted in dignity, trust, creativity, cultural humility, and mutual respect.
The Casa de Salud Health Apprentice Program is a unique opportunity for college students who aspire to become healthcare professionals to learn on-the-job under the supervision of licensed and trained health professionals and peers. This program will assist students in gaining experience for entry level positions in health care settings and to create a solid foundation for medical school or other related careers. Many of our alumni go on to become doctors, nurse practitioners, physician assistants, nurses and administrators. Some return to practice medicine at Casa de Salud, or go on to careers in hospitals and other clinics.
Job Description
Apprentices assist in many aspects of patient care and clinical operation of the clinic and are trained in various tasks including patient communication and scheduling, taking vitals, drawing blood, preparing blood and urine samples for lab work, assisting in procedures, performing EKGs, and attending to harm reduction (syringe exchange) clients. Apprentices play a major role in running the clinic. They help to open and close the clinic, serve as language interpreters for clinicians who require interpretation once trained, and perform a variety of administrative and clerical duties in addition to direct patient contact.
