Position Title: Medical Scribe

Supervisor: Clinical Support Manager

FLSA Status: Non-Exempt

Job Summary:

The Medical Scribe is primarily responsible for the operation of electronic health records and electronic dictation systems and performs routine administrative and clinical tasks to keep the offices of medical providers running efficiently. The primary goal of this role is to increase the efficiency and productivity of the provider. The Medical Scribe’s task list includes, but is not limited to:

  • Accompanies provider into the patient examination room in order to transcribe a history and physical exam, and documents accurately the provider’s encounter with the patient and others present.
  • Accurately and thoroughly documents medical visits and procedures as they are being performed at the direction of the provider.
  • Ensures that all clinical data, lab or other test results and the interpretation of the results by the provider are recorded accurately in the medical record.
  • Generates and submits orders as directed by the provider.
  • Completes records by entering and reviewing patient information in the electronic medical record (NextGen).
  • Verifies patient information by interviewing patient; reviewing and/or recording medical history; taking vital signs; confirming purpose of visit or treatment.
  • Monitors, maintains, and stocks exam rooms.
  • Answers and returns telephone calls in a timely manner.
  • Cross trains and works other areas of the clinic to support departments and staff as needed.
  • Prepares patients for the health care visit by directing and/or accompanying them to the examining room.
  • Travels to alternate satellite clinics as required.

Supervisory Responsibility:

  • This position has no supervisory responsibilities.

Qualifications:

  • High School Diploma or GED; Bachelor’s Degree Preferred.
  • Previous medical field experience or science-based education required.

Skills & Abilities:

  • Proficient in typing, spelling, punctuation, grammar, and oral communication.
  • Ability to manage multiple priorities.
  • Knowledge of anatomy and medical terminology.
  • Recognition of physical exam process and ability to record exam details.
  • Organizational skills with focus on tracking patient care and improving patient flow.
  • Professional demeanor and recognition of privacy considerations for patients and families.
  • Detail oriented.
  • Ability to follow oral and written instructions.
  • Strong computer skills.
  • Ability to work well whether alone or as part of a team.

Work Environment:

While performing the duties of this job, the employee regularly works in a clinic setting. Travel to other clinic locations may be required, dependent upon staffing needs. This position is 100% in-office given the nature of the responsibilities.

While performing the duties of this job, the employee is regularly required to stand; walk; sit; use hands to grasp, handle, or feel objects, tools, or controls; reach with hands and arms; balance; stoop, kneel, crouch; talk, hear and smell. The employee must be able to sit for 90% of the workday. The employee must be able to lift or move up to 20 pounds. Specific vision abilities required by the job include close vision, distance vision, color vision, peripheral vision, depth perception and the ability to adjust focus.

Compensation & Work Schedule:

  • Full-time: 40 hours/week.
  • Non-Exempt.
  • Day Shift: Monday - Friday, 8 hour shift between the hours of 6:45AM - 3:15PM.
  • No evenings or weekends.

  • Mileage reimbursement for work travel at standard IRS rate.
