Job description

Role of the Ophthalmic Medical scribe is to assist the physician with documentation of the patient's electronic medical record (EMR). The remote scribe will review recorded audio and transcribe the history and examination of the patient as dictated by the physician. Under the direction of the physician, the scribe will record the condition of a patient (as stated by the patient), record results of the exam by the physician, input prescriptions and orders, ensure appropriate coding of the exams, and documenting future appointments. The remote scribe will assist will phone calls and patient follow-up, tasks, prepares educational material, and coordinate referrals when necessary.

Required Minimum Education: High School Diploma required, some college or degree preferred; Scribe Certification required within 3 months of employment

Required Minimum Experience:1 โ€“ 2 years in healthcare environment

A combination of experience, education, and/or training which substantially demonstrates the following knowledge,
skills and abilities:
โ€ข Familiar with EMR System
โ€ข Excellent interpersonal and communications skills
โ€ข Punctual and reliable
โ€ข Must be able to multitask
โ€ข Conscientious about triage and escalation of issues
โ€ข Excellent typing skills at least 55 wpm with accuracy
โ€ข Proficient in listening and understanding abilities
โ€ข Familiar with diagnostic codes
โ€ข Ability to learn โ€œon the jobโ€
โ€ข Must be able to work with both Ophthalmologists and Optometrists

CORE COMPETENCIES:
โ€ข Load patient data into EMR system to maintain punctual and accurate documentation in a timely manner
โ€ข Documents medical information dictated by doctor during patient exam into EMR system
โ€ข Route charts when necessary, assigns and completes patient follow-up, tasks by end of shift or within 24- hours depending on urgency of issue
โ€ข Remain friendly and helpful to doctors and colleagues at all times
โ€ข Learn and master AIDET training, exhibit at all times when interfacing with patients
โ€ข Responsible to confirm that patient understands information explained by provider
โ€ข Answer questions regarding medications prescribed by the physician; involves physician if there are questions outside of scribeโ€™s scope
โ€ข Responsible for properly coding visit and services provided under the providerโ€™s oversight
โ€ข Responsible to keep provider informed of patient needs or portal communication
โ€ข Documents any procedures that may be performed by the provider or ophthalmic medical personnel
โ€ข Accurately transcribes any consultations or discussions with family members
โ€ข Assist with patient care, only if directed by the physician
โ€ข By end of day, make assessments of charts and follow-up with patients (letters, email, prescriptions) as indicated in EMR system
โ€ข Involve and escalate any issues, in a timely manner, to Supervisor, Practice Manager, and/or Provider as
needed
