Assistant Operations Manager - Scrap Metal Recycling - Base Salary to 100k/year - Westport, MA

  • Our client, a growing scrap metal recycling and processing operation, is seeking an experienced Assistant Operations Manager to support 2nd shift operations at their recycling facility in Westport, MA. This role will oversee daily yard operations, production flow, ELV processing activities, shredder support operations, safety initiatives, and environmental compliance efforts across the facility.
  • The Assistant Operations Manager will work closely with operations leadership, production teams, maintenance personnel, and EHS staff to help drive operational efficiency, throughput, and safe processing practices within a high-volume scrap recycling environment.

Responsibilities:

  • Assist in managing daily recycling facility operations, including ELV processing, scrap yard material flow, shredder support operations, ferrous and non-ferrous material processing, and inbound/outbound scrap handling
  • Coordinate daily and weekly production priorities with department leads and yard supervisors
  • Monitor production throughput, downtime, material flow, and operational bottlenecks to support production targets
  • Help oversee shredder feed preparation and downstream processing operations
  • Step in to supervise facility operations during the Operations Manager’s absence
  • Support safe operation of heavy equipment and recycling processing equipment throughout the yard
  • Coordinate with Environmental Health & Safety and HR personnel to reinforce workplace safety initiatives and compliance standards
  • Participate in safety meetings, facility audits, incident investigations, corrective action planning, and continuous improvement initiatives
  • Ensure environmental compliance related to ELV depollution, fluid removal, stormwater management, housekeeping standards, and scrap containment procedures
  • Reinforce proper PPE usage, equipment operation procedures, and safe work practices across all operational areas
  • Support operational process improvements focused on productivity, efficiency, equipment utilization, and material recovery

Qualifications:

  • 3+ years of experience within scrap metal recycling, metal processing, salvage operations, heavy industrial manufacturing, or recycling facility operations.
  • Prior supervisory, lead, or operations oversight experience within a scrap yard, recycling facility, shredder operation, ELV processing environment, or similar heavy industrial setting is required.
  • Strong working knowledge of ELV depollution processes, shredder feed preparation, ferrous and non-ferrous scrap segregation, material flow coordination, and overall recycling yard operations.
  • Experience coordinating production priorities, managing operational workflows, and supporting throughput goals within a high-volume industrial environment is highly valued.
  • Candidates must be able to work 2nd shift hours (11:00 AM – 7:00 PM) and have Saturday availability.
