Position Summaryย 

Pacific Science Centerโ€™sย (PacSci)ย outreach education programs bring the best of the science centerย to schools and community groupsย across Washington state with hands-on STEM programming that sparks curiosity and fuels a passion for discovery, experimentation, and critical thinking.ย Outreach programs, both in-person and virtual,ย areย essential toย PacSciโ€™sย commitment to provide access to inclusive STEM education for all.ย The Outreach Education Curriculum Coordinator develops,ย revisesย andย maintainsย educational content forย PacSciโ€™sย outreach education programs- Science on Wheels and Digital Discovery Workshops. This roleย alsoย leadsย curriculum systems and project managementย andย spends up toย 30% of their time teaching programsย alongside Outreach Educators.ย

This position requiresย an irregular work schedule, including weekend work and overnight staysย across the state while delivering programming (room and board paid byย PacSci).ย This is a grant-funded position through Juneย 2029.ย 

Essential Duties & Responsibilitiesย 

Curriculumย Coordination:ย 

  • Developย and reviseย curriculumย forย Prek-8thย gradeย outreach educationย programs, including lesson plans and assembly scriptsย 

  • Ensure programs are aligned withย Washingtonย stateย learningย standards,ย based on student sensemaking, and areย designed withย inclusion,ย diversity,ย equity, andย accessย at the centerย 

  • Establishย andย maintainย systems for curriculum creation, assessment,ย prioritizationย andย upkeepย 

  • Drive curriculumย projects for their entire lifecycle, including setting timelines,ย drafting content, prototyping activities, and evaluating successย 

  • Collaborateย with external partnersย such asย subject matter experts, Indigenous partners,ย orย local industryย to inform contentย 

  • Collaborate with admin team toย assessย andย purchaseย teaching materialsย to best serve program learning objectivesย 

STEMย Program delivery:ย 

  • Use inclusive and culturally relevant teachingย strategies andย classroom managementย methodsย toย leadย classroom workshops, perform exciting science shows, teach live virtual programs,ย andย facilitateย hands-on exhibit sets.ย 

  • Engage with diverse audiences, primarily in Prek-8thย grade, ranging from small classroom groups to whole school assemblies of over 400 studentsย 

  • Provide excellent customer service while communicating with school staff and community membersย 

Staff support:ย 

  • Maintain a positive, inclusive, andย equitableย work environment in all aspects of communication with colleagues.ย 

  • Create,ย conductย andย maintainย trainingsย for staff to ensure program quality standards, operationalย excellence, andย to supportย staffย professional development.ย

Position Requirementsย 

  • Ability to create, revise and assess lessons aligned withย Washington stateย learningย standards,ย including primarilyย Next Generation Science Standardsย (NGSS)ย 

  • Ability to applyย inclusive designย toย curriculum, such as universal design for learningย (UDL)ย andย culturallyย sustainingย teaching practicesย 

  • PreK-8th grade Science, Technology, Engineering and Math (STEM) basic content knowledgeย 

  • Excellent time and project management; able to prioritize, problem-solve and develop realistic action plansย 

  • Excels in giving and receiving feedback and iterating work to incorporate stakeholder inputย 

  • Excellent customer service skills including composure under pressure, and the ability toย representย Pacific Science Centerโ€™s mission and focus on guest experience on and off siteย 

  • Excellentย writingย and attention to detail;ย communicatesย effectively, respectfully, andย in a timely manner.ย 

  • Strong interpersonal and listening skillsย 

  • Adaptive public speaking skills; ableย to present dynamic educational programs for both small and large groupsย 

  • Ability toย maintainย energy and enthusiasm with a friendly, positive demeanor and outlook when faced with unexpected challenges during travel or program deliveryย 

  • Proficient inย Microsoft Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Outlook, and file sharingย software such asย Sharepointย 

Qualificationsย 

Requiredย 

  • At leastย 1ย yearย experienceย creatingย NGSSย alignedย and inclusively designedย curriculumย 

  • At leastย 6 monthsย experienceย coordinatingย projects that require setting timelines,ย delegatingย tasksย and ensuring quality outcomesย 

  • At leastย 1 yearย experience working withย PreK-8thย gradeย youth in an educational settingย 

  • Undergraduate degree in a related field, OR equivalent combination of education and experienceย 

  • Ability to travel up to 4 consecutive days for regional program delivery.ย ย 

  • Validย driverโ€™s license with 5 years of driving experience,ย good drivingย record and abilityย and willingness to drive a 15-passenger van.ย Must be at least 21 years old for vehicle insurance purposes.ย 

Preferred ย 

  • Experience withย additionalย relevantย Washington state learning standards such as Common Coreย for Math, Computer Science,ย Early Learning, and Social Emotional Learningย 

  • Experienceย collaboratingย with Indigenous partnersย onย educational experiencesย 

  • Proficiencyย in Spanish with an ability toย verballyย communicate science concepts at a PreK-8thย grade level (may qualify candidate forย additionalย payย premium)ย 

Physical Demands & Working Conditionsย 

The workplace environment will include outdoors, inside schools, and in an office environment. Physical demands of the position could include moving supplies and objects up to 35ย lbs, positioning oneself at various levels including at a childโ€™s height; must be able to communicate verbally and in writing, utilizing radios, telephone, and virtual platforms to give and receive information, as well as engaging in public speaking for groups from 2 to 500 in live presentations. Position duties will require an individual to maneuver through crowded areas; manipulate and safely use objects,ย toolsย or controls; reach to retrieve supplies and objects; respond quickly to sounds in the area. The noise level in the shared office space varies from low to moderate, oftenย utilizingย a computer workstation. Noise-level during program delivery can be expected to increase in volume as the number of participants increases. Running technology requires varying levels of visual acuity.ย ย 

Work must be performed onsite and at program locations, ranging from nearby programs in the Seattle area to regional programs across the state of Washington. Work schedules will flex based on seasonal cycle needs throughout the year and will include some evenings and weekends, as well as multi-day travel.ย 

Position will also have exposure to dust, fumes, some loudย noisesย and chemicals (including but not limited to liquid nitrogen, helium and hydrogen gas, dry ice, acids and bases,ย irritantsย and latex). Must be able to drive 15 passengerย van.ย 

This position descriptionย generally describesย the principal functions of theย positionย and the level of knowledge and skills typicallyย required. Itย does not constituteย an employment agreement between the employer and the employee, and it is subject to change as the needs of the employer and the requirements of the job change.ย 

This role may be eligible for a $1/hr Language Proficiency Premium for demonstratedย proficiencyย in Spanish with an ability to verbally communicate science concepts at a PreK-8thย grade level.ย 

Language-specific duties include:ย 

Delivering 45minute workshops in Spanish or in dual language English/Spanish classroom settingsย 

Delivering key words and phrases from assemblies in Spanishย 

Reviewing and providing feedback on terminology that has been professionally translated from English to Spanishย 

Support Spanish language assessment in recruitment effortsย 

Eligibility for the premium requires the ability to communicate clearly, accurately, and appropriately in professional educational settings. The premium recognizes functional oral fluency and instructional use of Spanish and does not require full translation or interpretation services, or written fluency. Applicants considered for the Language Proficiency Premium will be tested during the recruitment process prior to employment. This will primarily consist of taking aย brief onlineย proficiencyย assessment and engaging inย Spanishย conversation during the interview.ย
