General Description:The Coordinator, Library Media Services promotes a culture of literacy and media engagement across schools. They collaborate with school librarians, coaches, teachers, administrators, and external stakeholders to coordinate initiatives and events. Additionally, this position supports library media specialists and administrators through professional development, coaching, and providing appropriately aligned resources to foster student academic success.
Essential Duties and Responsibilities:
- Organize professional development for librarians, educators, school librarians, and library media specialists to enhance skills in guiding students in literacy activities, aligning with SOLs, VSLA, and AASL standards.
- Stay current on literacy, media, and education trends for relevant training, ensuring continuous professional growth.
- Assist schools, school libraries, and library media specialists in acquiring and managing resources, aligning with SOLs, VSLA, and AASL standards.
- Collaborate with the district, including school librarians, to allocate funds for literacy initiatives considering SOL, VSLA, and AASL requirements
- Foster relationships with school administrators, teachers, and stakeholders, integrating literacy initiatives into RPS' educational framework, adhering to SOL, VSLA, and AASL guidelines.
- Lead division efforts for full integration of library media services and AASL standards into the RPS K-12 curriculum and instructional programs.
- Coordinate with instructional specialists to select and evaluate supplemental materials for the instructional program and support blended learning.
- Implement mechanisms for collecting data on the impact of literacy programs, focusing on measurable outcomes aligned with SOLs, VSLA, AASL, and textbook adoption criteria.
- Evaluate the effectiveness of literacy initiatives, providing recommendations for improvement based on assessments and stakeholder feedback.
- Work with curriculum specialists, school librarians, educators, and instructional specialists to integrate literacy and media skills into the district curriculum, aligning with SOLs, VSLA, and AASL standards.
- Develop an integrated K-12 curriculum for school librarians, advocating for alignment with educational standards, including SOLs, VSLA, AASL, and textbook adoption requirements.
- Guide library media specialists to develop and share exemplary practices; connect to related standards, innovative learning initiatives, and local Every Student Succeeds Act (ESSA) efforts.
- Serves as the Division Administrator for Destiny Library & Textbook Manager and key support person for training and troubleshooting.
- Manages the Destiny software system for student 1:1 Chromebook distribution, including training
- chromebook managers at all district locations and assisting the Technology Department with user and password management. Manages and expends the division's Library Media budget by managing purchases centrally.
- Manifest the Destiny software system for all RPS textbooks, including Title management and nomenclature. Manages all textbook barcode generation and ranges for all locations in the district.
- Oversees the physical textbook inventory for all district sites, fulfilling requests for additional materials and coordinating central distribution.
- Ensures timely adoption, distribution, and retrieval of textbooks in alignment with curriculum standards and instructional needs.
- Works closely with textbook vendors to negotiate contracts, monitor inventory, and update resources to align with curriculum revisions.
- Facilitates professional development sessions for educators and textbook coordinators on effective textbook utilization and integration into instructional practices.
- Implements data collection mechanisms to assess the impact of textbooks on student learning outcomes.
- Develops communication strategies to promote literacy activities within the district and school libraries, emphasizing SOL, VSLA, AASL, and textbook alignment.
- Showcases student achievements through district-wide publications and events, ensuring alignment with SOL, VSLA, AASL, and textbook adoption expectations for literacy education.
- Identifies and pursues grant opportunities to secure additional funding for literacy initiatives and activities, aligning proposals with SOL, VSLA, AASL, and textbook adoption requirements.
- Collaborates with school and district administration to develop fundraising strategies supporting literacy programs and adhering to SOL, VSLA, AASL, and textbook adoption guidelines.
- Stays abreast of technological advancements related to literacy and media, guiding technology integration into library activities, classrooms, and textbook materials, aligning with SOL, VSLA, AASL, and technology standards.
- Maintains and updates the Curriculum & Instruction portion of the district website, ensuring accuracy and accessibility of resources for all subject areas, including Math, ELA, Science, History, Health/PE, Fine Arts, and Library Media.
- Fosters digital literacy skills among students in collaboration with school librarians and library media specialists, ensuring alignment with SOLs, VSLA, AASL, and technology expectations.
- Collaborates with schools, school librarians, and the local community to engage parents in supporting literacy initiatives, aligning outreach efforts with SOL, VSLA, AASL, and textbook adoption objectives.
- Organizes events, workshops, or presentations to showcase student accomplishments and emphasize the importance of literacy education, including VHSL Academics, with a focus on SOL, VSLA, AASL, and textbook adoption alignment.
- Coordinates district literacy initiatives and events such as the annual Spelling Bee, ensuring communication and participation across all school sites.
- Manages and promotes the Lit Limo bookmobile program, including scheduling, inventory, book acquisition, stocking, and use of social media for outreach and community engagement.
- Oversees the district's book vending machine initiative, including programming, maintenance, repair, stocking, and promotion to encourage independent reading.
- Leads the RPS Summer Reading Initiative and manages the web page to reflect yearly activities.
- Provides expertise and advice on matters related to print and/or video copyright issues.
- Serves as a representative on the VAASL Library Supervisors' Section.
- Serves on district construction committees to advise architects and project leaders on library design best practices and functional layouts for new or renovated schools.
- Performs all other duties as assigned.
- Master's degree in a related field.
- Five (5) years of successful library media specialist experience.
- Demonstrated experience in diverse settings.
- Postgraduate Professional License with an endorsement in Library Media PreK-12.
- Bilingual/fluency in Spanish preferred.
- Thorough understanding of AASL standards for guiding library media specialists.
- Knowledge of Virginia Standards of Learning, Curriculum Frameworks, and Professional Practice of Teachers.
- Familiarity with teaching techniques, instructional materials, and current library services trends.
- Strong verbal and written communication, public relations, and organizational skills.
- Proven leadership and management abilities to achieve goals.
- Ability to model professionalism, engage in self-led continuous improvement, seek out feedback, and provide constructive feedback to colleagues
- Ability to collaborate effectively with parents, teachers, administrators, and community representatives.
PHYSICAL DEMANDS
Medium Work: Exerting up to 50 pounds of force occasionally, and/or up to 25 pounds of force frequently, and/or up to 10 pounds of force constantly to lift, carry, push, pull, or otherwise move objects. Work involves frequent standing, walking, talking, hearing, and reaching with hands and arms. Occasional stooping, kneeling, crouching, or climbing may be required when handling library resources, setting up displays, or managing textbook and technology inventory. WORK ENVIRONMENT
Work is performed in a combination of office, school, and library settings within a district administrative environment.
