Job description

SUMMARY OF POSITION:

Duneland School Corporation is seeking a compassionate, dependable, and student-centered School Health Assistant to join our Health Services team. This position will primarily provide individualized, one-on-one health support for a student with specialized medical needs, including seizure management and tube feedings, during the school day.

The School Health Assistant works under the direction of the Director of Health Services and collaborates closely with school staff, families, and healthcare providers to promote student safety, health, and educational access. When the assigned student is absent or additional support is needed, the School Health Assistant may assist nursing staff in clinics throughout the district.

Starting Pay Rate: ย $20

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:ย 

  • Licensed Practical Nurse (LPN) or Certified Nursing Assistant (CNA)
  • Current LPN licensure or CNA certification in the state of Indiana
  • CPR and First Aid certification preferred or willingness to obtain upon hire
  • Strong communication and teamwork skills
  • Ability to remain calm and respond appropriately in emergency situations
  • Ability to maintain confidentiality and professionalism in a school setting
  • Willingness to complete specialized training from the school nurse and educational professionals (such as the Epilepsy Foundation)

PRIMARY RESPONSIBILITIES:ย 

  • Provide one-on-one support and monitoring for a student with seizures throughout the school day
  • Recognize seizure activity and respond according to the student's Seizure Action Plan and emergency protocols
  • Utilize medical equipment and interventions, including VNS magnet use and administration of intranasal seizure rescue medication, after appropriate training and delegation
  • Assist with tube feedings, mobility assistance, positioning, toileting, hygiene, and other personal care needs as assigned
  • Maintain accurate documentation of student health concerns, treatments, and incidents in Skyward
  • Communicate effectively with school nurses, teachers, administrators, and parents as appropriate
  • Assist with vision/hearing screenings, student health records, and other clinic duties as assigned
  • Assist the school nurse in providing daily health services to students
  • Float between school buildings to assist school nurses when the assigned student is absent or not in attendance
  • Participate in training and professional development related to student health needs and emergency response procedures

SCHEDULE:ย 

  • School-year position following the student attendance calendar
  • Hours:ย 5.75 hours per day / 28.75 hours per week
  • Additional opportunities to assist nursing staff across district buildings as needed
