Hourly Rate: $25.18 per Bargaining Unit Agreement
Position Overview:
The School Health Aide assists the School Nurse in providing first aid and routine health services to students and staff. This position performs delegated healthcare tasks and supports the daily operations of the school health office, as trained and directed by the School Nurse and/or Director of Health Services.
The School Health Aide works under the supervision of licensed nursing personnel and does not independently assume the role or full responsibilities of a School Nurse. This position is a one-on-one assignment.
Key Responsibilities:
Student Health Support
  • Administer first aid and emergency procedures as directed by the School Nurse and in accordance with Branford Public Schools policy.
  • Provide care to sick or injured students in the nurse's absence, including administration of medication in accordance with district policy and the Connecticut Nurse Practice Act.
  • If assigned to provide one-on-one support for a student with medical needs, participate in individualized training provided by the Director of Health Services regarding emergency medication administration and assistance with activities of daily living.

Health Office Operations
  • Perform required tasks related to routine maintenance of student health records, including documentation of health office visits, physical examinations, and immunization data entry into the electronic health record system.
  • Assist the School Nurse with state-mandated health screenings and follow-up referrals.
  • Provide temporary coverage of the school health office as needed, within the scope of delegated responsibilities.
  • Participate in Health Services staff development activities as designated by the Director of Health Services.
  • Perform other duties as assigned.

Education & Experience:
  • High School Diploma or GED required.
  • Current CPR/AED/First Aid certification or EMT certification required.
  • Experience working with school-aged children preferred.
  • Bilingual candidates preferred.

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:
  • Proficient computer skills, including word processing, email, and electronic data entry.
  • Basic verbal, written, and nonverbal communication skills.
  • Ability to follow detailed instructions and adhere to district policies and medical protocols.
  • Ability to maintain confidentiality and comply with FERPA and applicable health privacy regulations.
  • Ability to work effectively with students, staff, and families.
  • Ability to remain calm and maintain emotional control in stressful or emergency situations.
  • Ability to work effectively with frequent interruptions.

Physical Demands / Work Environment:

The employee is regularly required to stand, sit, kneel/squat, bend/stoop, push, pull, and twist. Frequent light lifting and carrying (less than 15 pounds) is required. The position may require heavy lifting (45 pounds or more), positioning students with physical disabilities, and assisting non-ambulatory students.
The employee will utilize standard medical clinic equipment, including an Automated External Defibrillator (AED), adaptive equipment for students with special needs, and standard office equipment. There is potential exposure to biological hazards, bacteria, and communicable diseases.
The employee must be able to maintain emotional control under stress and work effectively with frequent interruptions.
