Scale Operator
Main responsibilities:
Operate the scales within a warehouse or outdoor setting. All scale tickets must be verified and contain accurate information in regards to customer, material, and weights. This position is a customer facing role that requires providing excellent customer service.
Handle cash transactions: Process payments, issue change, and maintain accurate cash records.
  • Accurately inspect and purchase all materials ensuring correct weights, materials description and grade for all inbound and outbound loads. Determine any upgrades and enter into the inventory system.
  • Assist in the sorting and processing of materials.
  • Ensure accurate documentation of scale transactions.
  • Record transactions: Verify cash amounts received and prepare reports for daily transactions.
  • Communicate with staff: Use communication tools like walkie-talkies to facilitate smooth operations.
  • Maintain inventory: Ensure the cleanliness and organization of the scrap yard and maintain accurate inventory records.
  • Other duties as assigned.

Responsibilities also include tasks related to coverage at the yard's truck scale, as well as the Non-Ferrous Scale. Those duties include but are not limited to:
  • Weighing vehicles
  • Sampling of inbound materials
  • Maintaining inbound and outbound scaling documentation
  • Reviewing loads and paperwork for inbound and outbound vehicles
  • Upkeeping scale house and scales
  • Collecting fees from drivers and maintaining records
  • Ensuring trucks don't exceed their maximum weight by law
  • Performing safety inspections
  • Assisting in loading and unloading of vehicles
  • Keeping the weighbridge area clean and tidy
  • Issuing receipts to customers

Job Qualifications
  • High school diploma or general education degree (GED); College degree in business desirable or equivalent business experience

Job Related Experience
  • One to three years of previous cash handling experience in retail environment

Other Preferred Skills
  • Ability to learn many different types of scrap metal
  • Excellent phone etiquette with clear verbal communication skills
  • Basic math and computer skills necessary
  • Work with various levels of customers with a focus on service
