What is a scale attendant?

Scale attendants are professionals who operate and monitor weigh scales at facilities such as landfills, recycling centers, or industrial sites. Their main responsibilities include weighing incoming and outgoing vehicles, recording weight data, verifying load contents, and ensuring that all procedures comply with safety and regulatory standards. Scale attendants often interact with drivers, collect necessary documentation, and may also handle payments or issue receipts. They play a key role in maintaining accurate records for inventory, billing, and regulatory compliance.

What are some common challenges faced by scale attendants, and how can they be managed effectively?

Scale Attendants often encounter challenges such as handling high volumes of traffic during peak hours, ensuring accurate weight recordings, and dealing with customers who may be unfamiliar with procedures. Effective time management and strong attention to detail are crucial in minimizing errors and keeping operations running smoothly. Clear communication with truck drivers and teamwork with yard or dispatch personnel can also help resolve issues quickly and ensure compliance with safety and regulatory requirements.

Job description

About Coastal Waste & Recycling
At Coastal Waste & Recycling, we're building more than a company, we're building a team. As one of the fastest-growing privately held waste and recycling companies in the Southeast, we're looking for people who take pride in their work, put safety first, and are ready to grow with us.
Be the First Impression. Keep Operations Moving. Support the Team.
Are you organized, customer-focused, and enjoy working in a fast-paced environment? As a Scale Attendant at Coastal Waste & Recycling, you'll play a critical role in supporting our post-collection operations by accurately processing customer transactions, operating the truck scale system, and ensuring every customer receives exceptional service from the moment they arrive.
At Coastal, our Scale Attendants do more than weigh trucks-they are the administrative hub of our facilities, helping maintain accurate records, supporting operational efficiency, and creating a safe and professional experience for our customers.
Your Role
As a Scale Attendant, you'll be responsible for operating the truck scale system, processing customer transactions, verifying materials and account information, and maintaining accurate records. You'll work closely with Operations leadership, Facility Traffic Coordinators, and equipment operators to help ensure our facilities operate safely, efficiently, and professionally.
What You'll Do
  • Operate computerized truck scale systems to accurately process inbound and outbound vehicles.
  • Verify customer information, account details, material types, and transaction documentation.
  • Process scale tickets, receipts, invoices, and customer transactions accurately.
  • Collect payments and process cash, credit card, check, and account transactions when applicable.
  • Provide customers with guidance on disposal procedures, accepted materials, pricing, and facility operations.
  • Determine the acceptability of incoming materials and communicate questionable loads to Operations leadership.
  • Maintain accurate transaction records, reports, and supporting documentation.
  • Communicate with Operations leadership, Facility Traffic Coordinators, Dispatch, and equipment operators to support daily operations.
  • Help maintain the safe and efficient flow of customer traffic throughout the facility.
  • Perform general clerical duties including data entry, filing, answering phones, and recordkeeping.
  • Maintain a clean, organized, and professional scale house environment.
  • Identify and report customer concerns, operational issues, safety hazards, or equipment concerns.
  • At Coastal, we win as a team. Our Scale Attendants provide outstanding customer service, maintain accurate records, and help ensure our facilities operate safely, efficiently, and professionally every day.

What You'll Bring
  • One (1) or more years of experience in customer service, administrative support, cashiering, transportation, logistics, dispatch, scale operations, or another customer-facing role.
  • Strong attention to detail with excellent data entry accuracy.
  • Excellent communication and customer service skills.
  • Basic computer proficiency, including Microsoft Office and data entry systems.
  • Strong organizational and problem-solving skills.
  • Ability to manage multiple priorities in a fast-paced environment while maintaining accuracy.
  • Experience operating truck scale software, cash handling, waste and recycling, transportation, logistics, or environmental services, and bilingual (English/Spanish or English/Creole) skills are a plus.

Why You'll Love Working Here
  • Competitive Pay
  • Comprehensive Medical, Dental & Vision Benefits
  • 401(k) with Company Match
  • Paid Time Off & Holidays
  • Employee Referral Program
  • Career Growth & Professional Development Opportunities
  • Opportunity to work in a fast-paced operational environment where every day is different
  • Collaborative team culture built on safety, integrity, and customer service
  • Opportunity to grow your career with one of the fastest-growing environmental services companies in the Southeast

If you're someone who enjoys helping customers, staying organized, and supporting a busy operation where accuracy and teamwork matter, we'd love to have you join the Coastal Waste & Recycling team.
