Job description

Position Summary
Under the direction of the Site Manager, the Safety Supervisor is responsible for implementing work-site safety processes supporting corporate safety initiatives, training, and continuous improvement. This role helps ensure operations remain in compliance with Mine Safety and Health Administration (MSHA) requirements, company standards, and contractual obligations by coaching employees on health and safety expectations, reviewing work practices, conducting training, record-keeping. The Safety Supervisor partners with site leadership to ensure safety actions align with business and corporate safety objectives.
Supervisor Responsibilities
This position may provide day-to-day direction, oversight, and guidance to assigned staff, hourly personnel, or contractors, as needed.
Essential Duties and Responsibilities
  • Promote a safe and healthy workplace by supporting and helping enforce applicable MSHA requirements, site rules, and company Health and Safety Programs.
  • Partner with project leadership and operations/maintenance teams to identify hazards, evaluate risk, and recommend practical controls for mining and reclamation activities on the project site.
  • Implement and communicate corporate safety initiatives, coach employees and supervisors on current program requirements and safe work practices.
  • Verify work is performed in compliance with MSHA regulations, contractual obligations. and company standards through field observations, inspections, and document reviews.
  • Lead or support incident, near-miss, and hazard reporting and investigations; document findings, track corrective actions, and verify closeout.
  • Maintain and improve safety training materials for mining and reclamation project operations; coordinate delivery of training materials and maintain required training records.
  • Demonstrate and promote compliance with the Company Code of Conduct and support a respectful, compliant, and safety-focused work environment.
  • Perform other related duties as assigned.

Typical Physical Demands
  • Requires prolonged sitting, with occasional bending, stooping, stretching, and walking over uneven terrain and around active equipment.
  • Occasional lifting of materials weighing up to 30 pounds.
  • Manual dexterity and eye-hand coordination sufficient to operate office equipment (e.g., keyboard, phone, copier, calculator, other office and field equipment)
  • Requires the ability to communicate effectively, observe site conditions, and use a computer, phone, and standard office equipment to prepare reports and training materials.
  • Requires sufficient mobility to travel to and access mine and reclamation work areas.

Typical Working Conditions
Work involves both office and an active mine/reclamation environment with exposure to varying weather, noise, dust, and moving equipment. Schedule may include occasional evening or weekend work as needed to support operations, regulatory inspections, training, and incident response.
Education and Experience
  • Bachelor's degree from an accredited college or university in Occupational Health and Safety, Risk Management, or a related field.
  • Minimum five (5) years of experience leading safety in mining or heavy civil construction operations.
  • An equivalent combination of education, training, and experience that provides the required knowledge, skills, and abilities may be considered.

Licenses, Registration, and Certifications
  • MSHA Instructor certification, or ability to obtain one within 3 months required.
  • Colorado Surface Mine Foreman Certificate Preferred.
  • You must possess a valid driver's license through the duration of employment.
  • Must meet all insurability requirements as specified by Westmoreland's policies or Driver's insurance provider.
