What is a Retail Media Network?

A Retail Media Network (RMN) is an advertising platform operated by a retailer that allows brands to place ads on the retailer’s digital properties, such as websites, apps, and in-store displays. These networks leverage the retailer’s customer data to deliver highly targeted ads to shoppers, improving ad relevance and effectiveness. Retail Media Networks have become increasingly popular as brands seek to reach consumers closer to the point of purchase. They offer advertisers valuable access to first-party data and the ability to measure the impact of their ad campaigns directly on sales. This model benefits both retailers, by generating additional revenue, and brands, by increasing advertising efficiency.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a Retail Media Network Manager, and why are they important?

To thrive as a Retail Media Network Manager, you need expertise in digital marketing, data analytics, and retail industry knowledge, often supported by a relevant degree or experience in media planning and buying. Familiarity with advertising platforms (such as Google Ads, Meta, and retail-specific DSPs), marketing automation tools, and analytics software is crucial. Strong communication, project management, and relationship-building skills help you coordinate between brands, retailers, and internal teams. These competencies are essential for optimizing campaign performance, driving revenue growth, and ensuring seamless collaboration across stakeholders in a rapidly evolving retail media landscape.

How does a professional in a Retail Media Network role typically collaborate with brands and internal teams to execute successful campaigns?

In a Retail Media Network role, collaboration with both brands and internal teams is central to campaign success. Professionals frequently partner with brand representatives to understand campaign objectives, align on creative direction, and establish key performance indicators. Internally, they work closely with sales, analytics, merchandising, and technology teams to ensure campaigns are properly targeted, launched on schedule, and optimized in real-time. Regular cross-functional meetings and clear communication are essential, as is the ability to manage multiple projects simultaneously in a fast-paced retail environment.

Job description

Job Description
The Staples Media Network team is a fast-growing, high-visibility business focused on helping brands connect with customers through data-driven, full-funnel advertising solutions. As Staples continues to invest aggressively in the growth of its retail media network, we are seeking a highly motivated Media Planner to join the team and help shape the future of our vendor advertising programs.
In our Media Planner role, you will partner closely with Sales/Partnerships, Media Analytics, CX, Merchandising, and external agency partners to develop and activate strategic media programs on behalf of Staples and its vendor partners. You will play a key role in translating vendor business goals into thoughtful, performance-driven media strategies across Staples owned and operated channels as well as paid channels.
The ideal candidate is equal parts strategic thinker, project manager, and collaborator - someone who is curious about advertising, ecommerce, retail media, consumer behavior, testing, and performance optimization. This role is ideal for someone who wants exposure to end-to-end media strategy, from audience targeting and channel selection to creative messaging, activation, and performance analysis.
What You'll Be Doing:
  • Develop and activate integrated media campaigns across multiple channels including paid search, programmatic display, paid social, email, onsite media (Staples.com, Staples Advantage, Quill), and emerging retail media offerings
  • Build strategic media plans aligned to vendor objectives, KPIs, customer behavior, and business priorities
  • Partner with Sales teams to understand vendor goals and recommend the right media mix, targeting strategy, messaging, and landing page experiences to drive results
  • Collaborate cross-functionally with media analytics teams to interpret campaign performance and apply learnings to future planning cycles
  • Manage campaign execution from planning through launch, optimization, reporting, and wrap-up
  • Coordinate campaign elements including audience targeting, 1st party data strategy, creative development, promotional alignment, and landing page destinations
  • Serve as a day-to-day contact for vendor partners, media agencies, and internal cross-functional teams
  • Lead and participate in status meetings, campaign reviews, reporting discussions, and planning conversations
  • Support development of campaign reports and performance recaps; analyze campaign data and identify optimization opportunities
  • Own and maintain key operational documents including budget trackers, promotional calendars, flowcharts, creative specs etc
  • Identify opportunities to improve workflows, streamline processes, and enhance team efficiency as the business scales
  • Participate in client facing vendor presentations and "new business" opportunities to support growth of the Staples Media Network business

What You Bring to the Table:
  • Strategic mindset with an interest in understanding vendor business objectives and translating them into effective media strategies
  • Strong organizational and project management skills with the ability to manage multiple campaigns and deadlines simultaneously
  • Collaborative, relationship-driven approach with strong communication skills
  • Curiosity for digital advertising, ecommerce, retail media, consumer behavior, and campaign testing/optimization
  • Ability to thrive in a fast-paced, growth-oriented environment with evolving priorities

What's Needed-Basic Qualifications:
  • Bachelor's Degree or equivalent work experience
  • 2+ years of experience in media planning, advertising, media account management, or digital marketing

What's Needed-Preferred Qualifications:
  • Experience working within ecommerce, retail media networks, retail brands, agency or digital advertising
  • Familiarity with digital media channels including search, display, email, onsite media, and programmatic advertising
  • Comfort interpreting campaign data and translating insights into actionable recommendations
  • Experience managing multiple stakeholders, timelines, and campaign deliverables in parallel

What We Offer:
  • Opportunity to join a rapidly growing retail media business with significant visibility and impact
  • Collaborative and entrepreneurial team environment
  • Inclusive culture with associate-led Business Resource Groups
  • Competitive PTO package including 22 days PTO, 7 paid holidays, and 1 floating holiday
