How much do residential leasing agent jobs pay per hour?

As of Jul 6, 2026, the average hourly pay for residential leasing agent in the United States is $22.00, according to ZipRecruiter salary data. Most workers in this role earn between $16.59 and $26.68 per hour, depending on experience, location, and employer.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a Residential Leasing Agent, and why are they important?

To thrive as a Residential Leasing Agent, you need strong sales abilities, knowledge of property management, and typically a high school diploma or equivalent. Familiarity with property management software (such as Yardi or AppFolio), CRM systems, and sometimes a real estate license is valuable. Excellent communication, negotiation, and customer service skills set successful agents apart. These abilities are crucial for attracting tenants, closing leases efficiently, and maintaining positive relationships with residents and property owners.

How much do agents make on a lease?

Residential leasing agents typically earn a commission based on a percentage of the lease value, often ranging from 50% to 100% of one month's rent per lease signed. Some agents also receive a flat fee or a combination of salary and commission, depending on the employer and market conditions.

How does a Residential Leasing Agent typically collaborate with property managers and maintenance teams?

Residential Leasing Agents work closely with property managers to coordinate apartment showings, process applications, and ensure lease agreements are executed smoothly. They also communicate tenant needs or maintenance requests to the appropriate teams, helping to address issues promptly and maintain a positive resident experience. Effective collaboration and clear communication are key, as Leasing Agents often act as a bridge between prospective tenants, current residents, and the property management staff.

Will AI replace leasing agents?

AI technology can automate certain tasks performed by residential leasing agents, such as screening applicants and managing listings, but it is unlikely to fully replace the role. Leasing agents also rely on interpersonal skills, negotiation, and local knowledge, which are difficult for AI to replicate completely. Human oversight remains essential in providing personalized service and handling complex situations in property leasing.

Where do leasing agents make the most money?

Leasing agents tend to earn higher salaries in regions with a high cost of living and competitive rental markets, such as major metropolitan areas. Income can also increase with experience, certifications, and the size or type of property portfolio managed. However, overall earnings are influenced by local demand and employer compensation structures.

Is being a leasing agent a good career?

A residential leasing agent helps property owners find tenants and manages rental transactions, often working in an office or on-site environment. The role typically requires strong communication, customer service skills, and knowledge of leasing laws; it can offer flexible hours and opportunities for commissions or bonuses. Career growth may involve gaining experience for property management or real estate sales positions.

What are Residential Leasing Agents?

Residential Leasing Agents are real estate professionals who help property owners find suitable tenants for their residential properties, such as apartments, condos, or single-family homes. They are responsible for advertising vacancies, showing units to prospective renters, screening applicants, and handling lease agreements. In addition, they often coordinate move-ins and move-outs, address tenant concerns, and ensure properties comply with local rental laws. Their goal is to keep properties occupied with qualified tenants while providing excellent customer service to both landlords and renters.
