How much do apartment leasing agent jobs pay per hour?

As of Jul 13, 2026, the average hourly pay for apartment leasing agent in the United States is $17.18, according to ZipRecruiter salary data. Most workers in this role earn between $15.87 and $18.27 per hour, depending on experience, location, and employer.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as an Apartment Leasing Agent, and why are they important?

To thrive as an Apartment Leasing Agent, you need strong sales abilities, knowledge of property management practices, and typically a high school diploma or equivalent. Familiarity with property management software (like Yardi or AppFolio) and CRM systems is commonly required. Outstanding interpersonal skills, problem-solving, and effective communication help build rapport with prospective tenants and resolve issues efficiently. These skills ensure high occupancy rates, satisfied residents, and smooth operations within competitive rental markets.

What are apartment leasing agents?

Apartment leasing agents are professionals who assist property owners or management companies with renting out apartment units to prospective tenants. Their responsibilities include showing available apartments, explaining lease terms, processing rental applications, and ensuring compliance with fair housing laws. Leasing agents also help market properties, screen tenants, and facilitate lease signings to ensure a smooth move-in process. They serve as the main point of contact between landlords and renters during the leasing process.

What is the difference between Apartment Leasing Agent vs Property Manager?

AspectApartment Leasing AgentProperty Manager
CredentialsReal estate license often preferredReal estate license usually required
Work EnvironmentPrimarily sales-focused, leasing apartmentsOversees entire property operations
Employer & Industry UsageReal estate agencies, property management firmsProperty management companies, landlords
Primary ResponsibilitiesShow units, process leases, attract tenantsMaintenance, rent collection, tenant relations

While both roles involve working with tenants and properties, an Apartment Leasing Agent mainly focuses on leasing apartments and attracting tenants, whereas a Property Manager oversees the overall management and operations of the property. The leasing agent typically works under a property manager or real estate firm, with a stronger emphasis on sales and marketing.

What are some common challenges faced by Apartment Leasing Agents, and how can they be successfully managed?

Apartment Leasing Agents often navigate challenges such as meeting leasing targets during slow rental seasons, handling difficult tenant inquiries, and balancing administrative tasks with showing properties. Successful agents manage these by developing strong communication skills, staying organized with digital tools, and building positive relationships with prospective renters and property management teams. Proactively following up with leads and staying updated on market trends also helps overcome common obstacles and achieve leasing goals.

How much do leasing agents make per rental?

Leasing agents typically earn a commission or fee for each rental they secure, which can range from a flat fee of $50 to $200 per lease or a percentage of the first month's rent, often around 25-50%. Their total earnings depend on the number of rentals they close and the commission structure set by the property management company or leasing firm.

How to become a leasing agent without experience?

To become a leasing agent without experience, focus on developing strong communication and customer service skills, and consider completing a leasing or property management training course. Many employers provide on-the-job training, and obtaining a real estate license can also improve job prospects. Entry-level positions often require a high school diploma or equivalent and a willingness to learn industry-specific software and procedures.

Where do leasing agents make the most money?

Leasing agents tend to earn higher salaries in regions with a high cost of living and competitive rental markets, such as major metropolitan areas. Income can also increase with experience, certifications, and the size or prestige of the property management company they work for.

What Does an Apartment Leasing Agent Do?

An apartment leasing agent works on behalf of an apartment owner for a complex, and your main job is to show apartments to potential tenants. In this position, your duties overlap with those of a property manager, because you have to maintain the apartments’ suitability for habitation. You also advertise vacancies on the market and try to find people to sign for a lease. Overall, the leasing agent functions as a representative of the apartment’s owner but has more direct customer service duties.

Is being an apartment leasing agent a good job?

An apartment leasing agent is responsible for showing rental units, processing applications, and managing lease agreements. The role typically requires strong communication skills, customer service abilities, and knowledge of leasing software. It can offer flexible hours and commission-based pay, but may involve dealing with difficult customers and high-pressure situations.
