What is a repossession spotter?

A Repossession Spotter, also known as a Field Investigator or License Plate Reader (LPR) Spotter, locates vehicles that are subject to repossession. They patrol assigned areas, scan license plates using specialized equipment, and report the vehicle's location to a repossession agent. Spotters do not physically repossess vehicles; they collect information and ensure an efficient recovery process. The job requires attention to detail, strong observational skills, and discretion. It often involves working at night or irregular hours to locate vehicles when they are most likely to be present.

What does a repossession spotter do?

A typical day for a Repossession Spotter involves driving through assigned areas to locate vehicles identified for repossession, documenting their locations and conditions, and relaying this information to recovery agents via digital reporting systems. You’ll often work independently, but close collaboration with the repossession team ensures safe and successful vehicle recovery. Challenges can include working irregular hours, adapting to changing assignments, and staying vigilant in diverse neighborhoods. This role offers valuable field experience and can serve as a stepping stone to more advanced positions within the repossession industry, such as Recovery Agent or Field Investigator.

Strong communication, discretion, and the ability to remain calm under pressure are vital soft skills for this role. These qualities help ensure repossessions are conducted safely, efficiently, and in accordance with legal guidelines.

How to become a certified repossession spotter?

To become a certified repossession spotter, individuals typically need to complete training programs that cover legal and safety procedures, and may need to obtain a license or certification depending on state or local regulations. The ideal candidate is self-motivated, dependable, and comfortable working independently with minimal supervision.
