What is a remote paralegal?

Remote paralegals are legal professionals who provide paralegal services from a location outside of a traditional law office, often working from home. They assist attorneys with tasks such as legal research, drafting documents, case preparation, and client communication using digital tools. Remote paralegals rely on technology to securely access and manage case files, collaborate with legal teams, and meet deadlines. This role allows for flexibility and can support law firms, corporations, or independent attorneys across different locations.

What does a remote paralegal do?

As a remote paralegal, your duties are to perform legal research, prepare legal documents, and interview witnesses or experts preparing to give testimony in civil or criminal trials, arbitration, litigation, and other forms of legal administration. Some paralegals work closely with a specific attorney at a firm, providing them with significant assistance in developing a case. You complete tasks like pulling and reviewing relevant case laws and precedents, drafting legal briefs, collecting information from the client, and ensuring that you file paperwork appropriately. Other paralegals provide more general administrative support.

Are remote paralegals in demand?

Remote paralegals are in high demand due to the increasing adoption of virtual legal services and the need for cost-effective support in law firms and legal departments. Their skills in legal research, document management, and familiarity with legal software make them valuable in a remote work environment, which is becoming more common across the legal industry.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a remote paralegal, and why are they important?

To thrive as a Remote Paralegal, you need a solid understanding of legal concepts, document drafting, and research, typically supported by a paralegal certificate or relevant degree. Familiarity with legal research databases (like Westlaw or LexisNexis), case management software, and secure file-sharing platforms is essential. Excellent written communication, attention to detail, and strong organizational skills help you stand out in a virtual environment. These abilities are crucial for delivering accurate legal support, maintaining confidentiality, and ensuring seamless collaboration with attorneys and clients remotely.

Why is it so hard to find a job as a remote paralegal?

Remote paralegal positions are competitive due to high demand for legal support roles and the need for specialized skills such as legal research and document management. Employers often prefer candidates with relevant certifications, experience, and proficiency in legal software, which can limit the number of qualified applicants. Additionally, some firms prioritize local candidates for in-person collaboration, making remote opportunities more limited.

How does a remote paralegal typically collaborate with attorneys and other team members?

As a remote paralegal, collaboration with attorneys and legal staff often occurs through digital communication tools such as email, video conferencing, and case management software. You may participate in virtual meetings, share documents securely online, and use project management platforms to track case progress. Building strong communication skills and being proactive in providing updates are essential for staying aligned with the team. Despite the distance, most remote paralegals are expected to be responsive and maintain regular touchpoints to ensure smooth workflow and effective support.

How to become a paralegal who works remotely?

The educational qualifications you need to become a virtual or remote paralegal vary. Many employers prefer candidates with a bachelor’s degree in paralegal studies or a closely related field. Some employers accept candidates with an associate’s degree, certificate, or experience. A remote paralegal needs organizational skills and a stable internet connection to complete their duties, which may include legal document preparation, data entry, and research on behalf of an attorney or a law firm.

This role will take ownership of substantive litigation support, including discovery drafting, e-filing, subpoenas, deposition preparation, and trial preparation across approximately 40 active matters. The ideal candidate has strong California civil litigation experience and can confidently manage paralegal responsibilities with minimal training or supervision. This person must be independent, resourceful, and comfortable working within a small, fully remote team.
Responsibilities
  • Draft initial discovery and assist with other substantive litigation documents
  • Prepare and manage subpoenas, including coordinating supporting documentation
  • Handle state and federal e-filing, with the majority of filings in California state courts
  • Support attorneys with deposition preparation, including organizing exhibits and preparing supporting materials
  • Assist with trial preparation, including exhibits, binders, and case materials
  • Prepare document shells and format litigation documents for attorney review and filing
  • Support four attorneys across business and real estate litigation matters while independently managing competing priorities

Requirements
  • 4-5+ years of civil litigation paralegal experience
  • Strong hands-on experience with California civil litigation procedures
  • Proven experience with e-filing, discovery drafting, document formatting, and subpoenas
  • Experience supporting deposition and litigation preparation
  • Ability to work independently with minimal training or day-to-day supervision
  • Previous success working in a remote or hybrid environment
  • Strong organizational skills, attention to detail, and confidence managing multiple active matters

Benefits
  • Potential bonus opportunity
  • Medical, dental and vision coverage with 50% of employee premiums covered
  • 401(k) with employer match eligibility after one year
  • 3 Weeks of combined vacation and sick PTO
  • Paid federal holidays
  • Home office technology stipend of approximately $2,500 every six months

If you're an experienced litigation paralegal looking for a long-term opportunity where your expertise will be valued, your contributions will make a visible impact, and you'll enjoy the flexibility of a fully remote role, we encourage you to apply today.
