What is a Remote Trauma Informed Practitioner?

A Remote Trauma Informed Practitioner is a professional who provides support and guidance to individuals affected by trauma, using a trauma-informed approach, while working remotely via phone, video calls, or online platforms. They focus on creating a safe, empathetic environment and tailor interventions to respect the unique experiences of each client. These practitioners often work in fields like mental health, social work, education, or counseling, and help clients develop coping strategies, resilience, and recovery plans. Working remotely allows them to reach clients who may have barriers to in-person care, such as mobility issues or living in remote areas.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a Remote Trauma Informed Practitioner, and why are they important?

To thrive as a Remote Trauma Informed Practitioner, you typically need a background in psychology, social work, or counseling, with specialized training or certification in trauma-informed care. Familiarity with telehealth platforms, secure video conferencing tools, and electronic record-keeping systems is essential for virtual practice. Outstanding active listening, empathy, and cultural sensitivity help practitioners build trust and support clients remotely. These skills and qualifications are vital to effectively deliver trauma-informed support, ensure client safety, and foster resilience in diverse populations through remote channels.

What are the main challenges of working as a Remote Trauma Informed Practitioner, and how can they be managed?

One of the main challenges of working remotely as a Trauma Informed Practitioner is building trust and rapport with clients through virtual platforms, as non-verbal cues can be harder to interpret. Practitioners may also experience feelings of isolation due to limited in-person interaction with colleagues. To manage these challenges, it is important to establish clear communication protocols, regularly participate in supervision or peer support groups, and utilize secure, user-friendly technology to maintain client engagement. Setting boundaries around work hours and self-care practices can also help prevent burnout in a remote setting.

Empower Recovery. Transform Lives.

At Foundation Senior Services, we believe that emotional healing and recovery are possible for every individualโ€”especially those who have served our country. We are seeking a Clinical Mental Health Counselor to provide telehealth and hybrid counseling services for veterans, active-duty military, and their families, delivering high-quality care through a trauma-informed, culturally responsive lens.

As part of our mission-driven behavioral health team, you will provide therapy, treatment planning, and wellness support for clients managing anxiety, depression, PTSD, trauma, grief, substance use, and co-occurring disorders.

Position Overview

The Clinical Mental Health Counselor will provide individual, couples, and group therapy sessions via secure telehealth platforms, focusing on evidence-based modalities designed to meet the unique needs of the veteran community. The counselor will work collaboratively with psychiatric nurse practitioners, psychiatrists, and case managers to ensure holistic, coordinated care.

Key Responsibilities
  • Provide telehealth counseling sessions for veterans and adults experiencing mental health and/or substance use challenges.

  • Conduct comprehensive biopsychosocial and diagnostic assessments and formulate individualized treatment plans in alignment with DSM-5-TR criteria.

  • Deliver evidence-based interventions (e.g., CBT, DBT, EMDR, Motivational Interviewing, Trauma-Focused CBT) tailored to the clientโ€™s needs.

  • Facilitate psychoeducational or therapeutic groups for veterans focused on wellness, coping skills, and resilience.

  • Maintain accurate and timely documentation in the electronic health record (EHR) for all sessions, treatment plans, and progress notes.

  • Collaborate with psychiatric providers for medication management coordination and case review.

  • Participate in clinical supervision, team meetings, and professional development opportunities.

  • Maintain ethical and legal standards consistent with state licensing boards, HIPAA, and VA/TriWest telehealth compliance requirements.

  • Support clients with transition planning, resource referrals, and follow-up care to ensure continuity of treatment.

Minimum Qualifications
  • Active Texas license: LPC, LPC-Associate, LMFT, LMFT-Associate, LCSW, or LMSW under supervision.

  • Masterโ€™s degree in Clinical Mental Health Counseling, Psychology, Marriage & Family Therapy, or Social Work from an accredited program.

  • Minimum 1 year of direct counseling experience (telehealth experience preferred).

  • Familiarity with veteran populations, trauma-informed and culturally competent care.

  • Proficiency with Finale Health EHR or similar telehealth systems.

  • Strong written and verbal communication skills; excellent time management.

Preferred Qualifications
  • Experience working with VA Community Care, TriWest, or other veteran-based referral systems.

  • Certification or training in Trauma-Focused CBT, EMDR, or Military Cultural Competency.

  • Knowledge of co-occurring substance use disorders and dual-diagnosis treatment.

  • Bilingual (English/Spanish) strongly preferred.

  • LPC-Associates or LMSWs under active supervision are welcome to apply.

What We Offer
  • Competitive compensation based on licensure and caseload.

  • Flexible scheduling for telehealth sessions (evenings, weekdays, weekends).

  • W-2 or 1099 options based on your preference.

  • Full administrative and billing support, including credentialing assistance for TriWest/VA.

  • Clinical supervision and consultation opportunities.

  • Ongoing CEU and professional development options.

  • A supportive, multidisciplinary team committed to the healing of those who served.
